With the screed rails in place, you are ready to add the bedding sand. This layer should be between 20 to 30 mm (0.8 to 1.2 inches) thick. Start by pouring some bedding sand along one side of the screed rail, establishing the initial height. Then, fill the space between the rails evenly with sand, ensuring it's slightly higher than the top of your rails. Once the sand is loosely spread, use your screed tool, resting it on the rails, and work your way across the area. Drag the screed along the rails to evenly spread and remove excess sand, creating a perfectly flat and level surface at the correct height. Finally, carefully remove the screed rails. Backfill the narrow gaps left by the rails with extra bedding sand and smooth them out using a trowel to complete your perfect paver base.
