Excavate the entire patio area to a depth of 7 inches. This depth accounts for 3.5 inches of drainage gravel, 1 inch of sand, and 2.5 inches for the paver stones. Use a tape measure and a straight board placed across the excavated area to periodically check the depth, especially in the center, ensuring a consistent 7-inch depth throughout.
