The first crucial step is to meticulously plan the size and layout of your desired patio. Following this, you will begin the site preparation by excavating the designated area. To accurately determine the required excavation depth, sum the individual thicknesses of your chosen pavers, plus an additional 1 inch for the sand bedding layer, and the specified thickness for your gravel base (the video recommends 4 inches for the gravel base). Once the excavation depth is calculated and the patio area is clearly marked out, compact the existing native soil thoroughly. You can achieve this using a hand tamp, or if you are working on a larger paver area, it is highly recommended to rent a more powerful compactor from a local hardware store for increased efficiency and effectiveness.
