After structural repairs, wood filler is applied to all holes, cracks, and imperfections on the treads, risers, and railings. A putty knife or similar tool is used to spread the wood filler smoothly and evenly. Once the filler is dry, a sanding block is used for the banisters and risers, and an orbital palm sander is used for the flat stair treads to achieve a smooth finish, removing any excess filler and preparing the wood for painting and staining.
