Installing Water Shut Off Valves On Copper Pipe

What happens here

Carefully slide the fluxed male adapters onto the fluxed copper stub-out pipes, ensuring they are seated properly. Using a torch, begin heating the copper pipe near the joint. Once the pipe is hot enough (the flux will begin to bubble and turn clear), touch the end of the solder wire to the joint, allowing it to be drawn into the joint by capillary action. Move the torch around the pipe to ensure even heat distribution and a complete seal. Repeat this process for the second copper pipe. After soldering, use an inspection mirror to carefully check the entire circumference of each joint to ensure the solder has flowed completely and there are no gaps or cold spots.

Goal: Permanently attach the male adapters to the copper stub-outs using solder.

Tools and materials

  • Inspection Mirror — Checking the quality of the solder joints from all angles
  • Solder — Creating the permanent bond between the pipes and fittings
  • Torch — Heating the copper pipes for soldering
  • Male Adapters — Being soldered onto the copper pipes
