What happens here

This video provides detailed instructions on how to replace old compression-style angle stops with new ones, including how to safely shut off the main water supply, remove stubborn old fittings using specialized tools, and install new compression fittings with proper sealing techniques. It also addresses common issues such as deformed copper pipes and tight working spaces.

hey folks that fix it guy here and a few days ago i had a high schooler that was interested in plumbing helped me change out some angle stops and install vanity so today i want to show you the angle stop process we ran into a little bit of snag but i got to show them some cool tools i got to show them a quality way to change out compression style angle stops so come along let's get to fixing [Music] [Applause] all right damon so what's the first thing we're gonna do whenever we're working with water today we're gonna be changing out some angle stops is the very first thing we're gonna do we need to shut off the water perfect let's go outside okay so what you have in your hand is a meter key this is one of your all-time favorite tools as a plumber when you're shutting water off outside why because unless you like spiders and scorpions and weird things like that depending on what location you're in you're going to end up touching them if you don't have one of those pop this bad boy open right there they actually have a little latch and just turn that to the right boom we're off train of water slower slower okay so this is what we're gonna be installing today i've got a four pack angle stop so i bought it in bulk because it says if you buy in bulk you save and that is what we're doing but first we got to take the old ones off i have brought three different types of angle stop puller for damien to check out this by far is my favorite one where's their little logo at the english tool company it's here somewhere very faded but awesome this one i love because you can hook up a ratchet with it and it's probably the easiest and slimmest i mean it is you look at it look at the size difference there right okay and then the last thing i'm gonna have him use the angle stop wrench right he could use two adjustable jaw wrenches but why whenever i have this right here and available all right so this is where we're rocking rolling here go ahead open that one up nope that's closing go ahead open this one up okay so now all of our water is gone beautiful thing about this wrench right here is it's actually designed specifically to take these off okay so what you want to do pop this apart this actually is going to go in here now we can do this right now without the nut on here but when we go to put these on you want the nut on because with the leverage you're applying on this you will totally egg these out do not do that you don't want to do that but for this purpose we're getting rid of these and it's gonna work out good so you just take this a lot of times i like to go as close as you possibly can that way it makes it a lot easier right if you have something real close together the leverage is so much easier to take apart right and so then there we go okay and then it's just a matter of hey getting that off spinning that out all right i'm doing the easy one so damn you can do the hard one okay now our next tool is this little bad boy so what we want to do you want to just make sure this is sucked in as far as it can go take this tighten that down on that nut as far as it'll go and then just start ratcheting get this to where it started going and you can see as you start ratcheting this is just pulling out now damian is going to see in a second exactly what i mean on how much easier this tool is than the others we're actually going to go ahead we're going to take this ring right here off we're going to leave it off and i'll put a different one on at another time because i don't have one right now what works for me with this right here is i like to just take this find a finger that this actually fits on and just have that right like that that way you have a place to put it okay you don't have to put a lot of this stuff you just go with a little bit and now we were also having the conversation about putting this on the threads so the ferrule is actually what seals a compression valve to me personally you don't have to put it on there you can but i just really never do and then you've already got that in place right there and then you can go ahead put it on and tighten and always make sure that it stays pushed back right you always want to make sure that it's all the way back against the front of the pipe oh so now what you're looking at you just unthreaded this right so that's what we're looking at that is a common thing why because you're actually threading backwards and it it it really can be difficult that way but you just have to remember now that you're actually tightening this one technically you want to give leverage there and you want to go the other way but you also want to keep this straight right so keeping this straight keeping this back inside against the wall and then tightening the opposite way essentially nice you feel that yeah there's a lot of tension okay all right so now this one's good you've got it on there just shut it off and we'll go to the next one okay so now that i've showed damian how to use this little bad boy now it is his turn and he gets to do it in the fun space like right there's there's not a lot of space there not a lot of space yeah okay first thing you got to do yep okay so that one is a little bit tricky right because you're looking at that and that actually is not a 3 8 so you can still use that other side of the wrench but you're going to have to reach behind you over there and you're going to have to grab an adjustable jaw so i'd grab that big yellow one that's probably going to help you out yeah so one thing that might help is try to actually turn the valve body instead okay right so hold that nut in the back and then just try to actually crank that body over to the left instead perfecto [Music] oh yeah i say sometimes people put these things on way too tight and a nice plumber's trick right when you're working in a tight space and you need something your jacket a towel something some kind of cushion to alleviate this from killing your ribs is great all right and so now damian's gonna have a crack at the old english tool right and just see how well this tool puller works for him he says he's used the other one so let's just see if he thinks this is a little bit better for him not a lot of space so that's the nice thing about this right here you want to switch to the other one and try that right just about twisting and like it's definitely a little bit more brutal [Music] i'm sorry now you're okay don't worry about that dude i know does it look like it's coming off straight okay i swapped damien out here and we're just about there right oh dude great okay so here's what we're looking at right this is this got completely misshaped this piece of copper and what we got to do here is we actually got to make sure that we've got enough good copper past this to put a valve back on we don't have to worry about this plate like this plate not a deal so we'll just take some snips here get that off and we've got plenty of pipe right there right no problem we don't have a cutter small enough to get to this side right here so with this vanity in place which they're going to be in place the majority of the time you're not going to be able to move this around move it out of your way right so i'm going to have to actually take a mini hacksaw and we're gonna have to just try to cut that that deformity off of there and get it hooked up oh man okay so look at that now i can just kind of get that look at that little narrow we we got that chopped out of there and we've got a pretty much straight piece of pipe right there but just clean up the burrs and we'll be able to hook that right up and you just always want to make sure you have the burr off of a pipe so we got the little whirly bird here a little pencil reamer and we'll get all that off of there oh that's a little bit too much [Music] take that edge off and now we're able to put one back in there all right so you got it here you know what's going on look at it he's already double dipping he's got two fingers ready to put some mega lock on we finally got both of those angle stops off and like i said a little bit of that stuff goes a long way right you don't have to put tons technically it probably doesn't even need it but this is just because compression fittings really don't need dope or tape but this just helps ensure a good seal and this stuff doesn't harden so it'll make it really easy to come off do you want to switch to a different wrench or do you think that's working or you want to switch to a different adjustable job here okay and just remember because that angle you can also flip that if you can't get the right angle there so now flip it that way yep that helps okay so all right so we got the valves in now we're gonna go ahead we're able to turn the water back on at this point and then we can start hooking up the rest of this vanity all right so here's what we go with right we're talking about when you open this back up you just take it open it a quarter of a turn and then we'll go in the house we'll check for flow make sure everything looks good and then it's just bringing this back up slowly so go to you can hear it there let's go a little bit more right about there is good that sounds like a good little something coming out all right all right so we got some flow downstairs all right folks so this probably was the smallest vanity ever and such a tight place to try to learn something but it's real world right i think that damien understands now if you're going to be a plumber you're also going to be a contortionist i really hope you folks are enjoying the videos please subscribe click that like button we'd love to have you keep coming back thank you very much and we'll see you again real soon
