Step 9 · Install the Replacement Section

This is the step most people slow down on. Take it one move at a time — there’s no rush, and you can rewind the clip as many times as you need.

Slide a shielded mechanical coupling onto each end of the existing cast iron pipe, rolling back the rubber gasket. Position your new PVC pipe section into the gap. Unroll the rubber gaskets from the couplings over the ends of the PVC pipe, ensuring the pipe is centered within the coupling. Slide the metal shield over the rubber gasket and tighten the band clamps using a torque wrench or a nut driver. Tighten the bands incrementally and evenly to the torque specification printed on the coupling (usually 60 in-lbs). This ensures a firm, leak-proof seal.
