Step 6 · Clean and Prepare Pipe Ends

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

To ensure a watertight seal, the ends of the remaining cast iron pipe must be clean and smooth. Use a metal file to remove any burrs or sharp edges from the inside and outside of the cut ends. Then, use a wire brush and rags to thoroughly clean the outer surface of the pipe where the new couplings will sit. The surface should be free of rust, dirt, and grease.
