Step 1 · Inspect and Clean the Floor

Before any sanding or finishing can begin, a comprehensive inspection of the hardwood floor is essential. Look for any areas with loose boards, protruding nails, or persistent squeaks. Address these issues by securing loose boards with screws or nails and lubricating squeaky floorboards. Following the inspection, a thorough cleaning is paramount. Sweep and vacuum the entire floor to remove all loose dirt, dust, pet hair, and any other debris. For a deeper clean, use a slightly damp mop with a hardwood floor cleaner, ensuring not to oversaturate the wood. Allow the floor to dry completely before proceeding.
