What happens here

This DIY project details the extensive preparation required for building a new retaining wall around a poolside area. It covers the strategic placement of protective ground coverings, the excavation and removal of compromised soil and a large tree stump, and the cleaning and repurposing of old retaining wall blocks to serve as a base for the new structure. The project highlights the challenges of working near buried utilities and existing concrete structures, emphasizing careful planning and execution.

all right playing for today the plane's out getting some material while we're waiting for him i'm gonna get the slat tracks back in place uh we're gonna start moving dirt behind uh behind the wall that was the existing wall so all right let's just get into the day [Music] sam's got a really good plan but not everything goes according to plan every time and today that's what happens this rock will become the new base for the retaining wall but they've got to first get it dug out before they can put this in place doesn't look like a very big pile the reason those slat tracks or those white boards are laid down so haphazardly is they're placed strategically over the buried irrigation lines and buried utility lines plus this is actually cutting through the neighbor's property so we don't want to jeopardize anything like that well we could we can keep it here if you want we'll just we'll make our radius come in here is that what you want otherwise because i know we're coming out that way you don't want to come out this way do you okay yeah i'm just thinking about where the end used to be if you're going down we'll just go so it's going to come back a little bit yeah so we can shave that hill off yeah so the water will come this way okay you got it yep and and once we get all this rock removed we start pushing up the dirt to build it up against the sidewalk yeah we'll do that all the way around we'll work on that stump i think we get that stump up that'd be nice no it'd be nice to get it out of here removing the stump wasn't in our original bid nor was extending the retaining wall down and around the corner so these are add-on work that isn't going to go quite as easy as we all hope this stuff is giving us two main challenges one we've got that concrete that surrounds the pool and that limits our ability to safely dig all the way around it but number two we also know that we have varied power lines to the pool pump and the plumbing for the pool all in that area so we can't put too much pressure laterally into that soil because it could shatter a pvc pipe that's buried underground the soil that we're digging out can't be reused it's been compromised it's soft and compressionable clay and we don't want it as backfill behind our retaining wall and we don't want to put it anywhere near that pool so it's got to get hauled out now if we were in a bind and we needed to reuse the soil we could recondition it but to do that would mean we'd have to lay it all out we would have to rotate the soil to dry it out and then we would have to pick all of those roots out of that soil those roots are actually organic material and they will break down and they will compromise the soil further so it's just easier to haul it away stump has got to go we could grind it down in a worst case scenario but still by grinding it we leave some of that root structure behind and we don't want to leave any more than we have to by pulling it we can hopefully get all of the roots to come with it but pulling it is going to be a challenge [Music] what i gotta put the bucket back on [Music] oh plane cuts any lateral roots because they may be wrapped around that electrical box that's right behind his in a perfect world they'd use that mini excavator to dig that bucket in and just pop that stump right out but there's just too much at stake where it's positioned [Music] feels like they're saying they're going straight down there yeah i didn't i didn't think we were going to get it out of there even with the stump gone the loose roots still gotta go too [Music] the next step on this job is to get all of the rock that's surrounding the pool to go away [Music] but you'll actually see that we're leaving a good share of the old retaining wall in place [Music] we're gonna actually be building a new retaining wall in front of the old retaining wall and so the block that we peeled off from the top of the old retaining wall got scraped clean and can be reused as base for the next retaining wall and the reason it's only going to be used as base is because it will be covered up that way if there's any defects in the face of the block or the aesthetics no one will ever be able to see it but if the block has been structurally compromised it's already been thrown away the blocks you see us using have all been cleaned stacked and hand selected as base material 102 degrees uh we're we're at a spot we're comfortable stopping uh we have all the block that we're going to reuse for the base of the new wall cleaned off and stockpiled um we got the grade fixed around the pool so that's gonna be shedding water away we got that packed uh we got a load of junk and rock out brought some material in so yeah so we got everything all tarped up two looks like we're supposed to get a whole bunch of rain this weekend and uh let me see what else oh my god yeah all right well i think that's all i got yep start building on friday [Music]
