What happens here

This project details the process of demolishing an old, algae-filled swimming pool and backfilling it to reclaim the backyard space. The task involves using heavy machinery like a skid steer with various attachments (forks and a demolition grapple), manual labor for initial clean-up and cutting, and careful compaction techniques to ensure a stable, level ground after filling.

roller packing it down there and i was just going a little bit too fast and i hit that back wall there and uh popped it back all right let's look at the damage first real quick here i i'm feeling mean i'm feeling me tonight i'm feeling mean i'm [Music] this is a doozy i'm going to show you right now the worst one tim the worst swimming pool you ever came into is i'm wondering if you're thinking it's the same site i came into i've done a lot i can't remember the worst experience coming into a cesspool like this all over at the concrete pool yup where we uh lifted the lid and there was a bloated cap like how are we going to get that out that's back when i could smell too oh that death smell gags you now huh the smell of that experience seriously ryan the smell of that i remember that i remember that was the grossest f that was 10 years ago and it makes me gage 12 foot 2x6 and i'm like yeah i got some nails so i put a bunch of nails kind of at the end angling like up so i go like this and it's splashing you know and then boom hit the cat and you hear you know like all the gas comes out i'm dragging it in i'm like you know he's gagging right now it was so bad so he pulled it out it was a big cat too that was freaking the grossest thing i've ever seen [Music] the plan is to have alex take over this pool demo so this will be his very first one tim and i will be stopping in giving him some sense of direction but otherwise leaving him alone to handle this one [Music] tim sends alex to run and grab the beak while he cuts in an access point to get down to that pool liner [Music] so [Music] but tim can't just push through the sidewall to gain access to the pool bottom because the entire thing is connected all the way around if he pushes through one section the rest of it could topple like dominoes so he wants to cut out his path that will allow him to gain access to the bottom it took 18 minutes i don't feel like i got anywhere if everything could go just how you wanted it to huh [Music] everything has its own place tim sorts through the garbage and debris and puts that in one spot the metal backing will get recycled and the concrete goes to a different home that metal backing is connected to a thick concrete support down below and he's got to separate that while he's working on this though alex is running to go grab the beat which is the demolition grapple that we need to really do this job fast [Music] tim needs to expose the area where the metal is actually poured into the concrete that way he can start a cut with the sawzall but finish it by tearing it apart with the skid loader sometimes things just don't go as fast as you want them to go in time lapse [Music] and then alex shows up with the beak which is an attachment specifically designed for demolition work it allows us to put a heavy duty set of grapples underneath whatever we want to remove and a big giant jaw comes down and crushes everything in between the material below the liner looks like concrete but it's actually gunnite and crushes down almost into a powder just by touching it tim breaks that up so he can get a better angle at grabbing that liner anything else because that'll you know we got sand coming but um did you see like even though i broke that stuff away some of that stuff got mixed in how snotty it gets if you i've gone down there before and trusted it and then you start backing up and it breaks up and it like almost turns into like a wet clay underneath your tracks and sometimes even your back tracks just get sunk in so now you can't get anywhere so as you're going down you're always kind of feeling if you got traction to get back out and if you feel one track go then try to back out and if you feel like you're trying to go one way it's time to like if it's starting to slide because once you get sideways down there you're gonna be in trouble because you can't back up you know so then that's when you take you see how i took the fork stuck it in pushed my way out yeah you know you just gotta test it as you go so it'd be nice to have a little sand now with this pond scum it's gonna get slipperier you know more more slippery so um i don't know where i'm going but i don't want to know what predictable life is not what i want putting one foot down one step at a time let the road turn the pump gets out the water but there's still a layer of sledge on the bottom with a stroke of a pen take those the material on the bottom is basically like snot so to make it cohesive enough to move out we got to mix in some of our structural fill soil [Applause] you might get to the end doing nothing wrong to find you the gunite does not get removed it actually gets carefully broken up into a small pieces as possible and then that gets incorporated back into the soil and it acts as an amazing binding agent helping to stitch that soil together and actually firm it up [Music] [Applause] [Music] players [Music] they put the material in in very small lifts and use compression compaction to make sure that we won't have any settlement down the road now we could bring in a big plate compactor or a vibratory compactor but the problem is we don't know how much moisture lies below the pool bottom and anytime that you use vibratory compaction you risk pumping the water up from down below so we want to make sure that we use compression compaction and still get our soil sperm that way and then during one of the compaction cycles alex has a bit of a problem god all right had a little boo-boo with the asv why alex [Music] hey what happened to the asv you want to tell tell the story real quick yeah i was roller packing it down there and i was just going a little bit too fast and i hit that back wall there and uh pop the bag all right let's look at the damage first real quick here doesn't look like much well it actually is pretty good-sized dent but now this doesn't really all right close it alex go ahead nope won't close and well the camera's going off there what is that about a half inch in right there huh yeah yeah this frame looks this one looks alright maybe decent yeah and this one down here as well this one in here got a little torqued i don't know if i can see that you can see that dimple in it on right here that is a dimple right there so that's pretty significant but so let's see what did you run into won't we uh walk over there investigation crew out now yeah yeah you can see it right there on the back the yellow right there oh yeah right here for sure oh yeah that's a yellow dent looks like that's kind of is that yellow too yeah that was just because it hit on that okay a little yellow there the other there how fired you must have maybe turned i was coming straight back right here and just went boom okay because i noticed the camera up there was hit it got hit hard enough that camera was turned unless you bumped into it physically with your hand or something but i put it back straight but that was pretty pretty good hit on it yeah the pool doesn't give too much does it no yeah it's an accident i slowed it down after that yep can never learn lessons the easy way can we all right i guess we got a little more dirt to clean up we're gonna call it a night huh the next video guys we start to get into the heavier demolition we tear out the sidewalls remove the concrete and wrap up this job but the customer does have a few extra requests that they ask of us that's a little bit that's all we're gonna have today god bless go get em you guys and we'll see on another one [Music] he does a pretty good job huh he does okay he's he here's the thing with alex i was thinking about it last night alex is the kind of guy that concentrates on the job right his mind isn't on the party his mind isn't out fishing his mind is actually on the job but his mind is about two steps ahead on the job and so he gets pissed at himself because he's attempting to keep up to where he thinks he should be on the job in his mind and so he's always he always feels like he's one step behind so he's always rushing himself and when you do that you tend to have accidents now we can get him just to relax a little bit yeah and slow down a titch he's gonna be he's gonna be fine dude he's gonna be fine
