If you used painter's masking tape in step 2, remove it immediately after smoothing the caulk and before the caulk begins to dry or skin over. To remove, lift one edge of the tape and pull it away from the sealed joint at a 45-degree angle. Pull slowly and steadily to avoid disturbing the newly applied caulk bead and ensure a crisp, clean line.
