Immediately after applying the caulk, smooth the bead. Lightly wet your finger and run it along the caulk line with gentle, consistent pressure. This process, called 'tooling,' pushes the caulk firmly into the joint for a good seal and creates a smooth, concave finish. Wipe any excess caulk from your finger onto a clean rag as you go.
