Immediately after applying the caulk, smooth the bead. You can use a damp paper towel wrapped around your fingertip, or simply your wet finger. Gently run your finger along the fresh caulk bead, applying light pressure. This process, known as 'tooling', pushes the caulk into the joint to create a proper seal and removes excess caulk, leaving a smooth, concave, professional-looking finish. Wipe the excess caulk from your finger onto a separate paper towel as you go.
