Step 2 · Prepare the Soil

Dig into the selected area to a depth of at least 12 inches using a shovel or garden fork. Break up any compacted soil. Mix in well-rotted compost, aged manure, or other organic matter to enrich the soil and improve its structure. This is particularly important for heavy clay soils to enhance drainage. Aim for a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0 for most ornamental grasses.
