What 99% of People Don't know about retaining walls. #diy

What happens here

When constructing a retaining wall on a sloped grade (meaning the length of the wall itself is sloping), always start at the lowest point of the wall. This facilitates 'stepping up' with the blocks, where each subsequent section is built slightly higher than the previous one. This method is generally easier than 'stepping down,' which involves tucking blocks underneath. To create a step-up, fill the gap between the end of one course and the start of the next with rock, level with the top of the block, then place the next block on top, bridging the gap. Maintain a 'running bond' pattern for all block courses, even on curved walls, ensuring the vertical joints of one course are offset from the joints in the courses above and below it.

Goal: Build a visually appealing and stable wall on a sloped or curved path.

Tools and materials

  • 3/4 Clear Rock — Filling gaps in stepped sections and providing drainage
  • Concrete Saw — Cutting blocks to fit tight curves or custom shapes
  • Hammer — Driving pins into the blocks
  • Pins — Securing one block course to the next, preventing shifting
  • Retaining Wall Blocks Versa-Lok — Building the main structure of the wall, including steps and curves
  • Rubber Mallet — Gently tapping blocks into place and making adjustments
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes during cutting and hammering
  • Short Level — Ensuring individual blocks are level
