What happens here

This project details the process of removing a broken transmission from a classic Monte Carlo using improvisational methods due to the lack of specialized tools. It involves preparing a car lift, carefully detaching various components, and using a modified table and jack stand to support the heavy transmission during removal.

if aliens can build the pyramids we can get a transmission out without a transmission jack this looks like some really hot it is well the time has come the lift is finally functional in the shop we're gonna pull the blown-up transmission out of the monte carlo right now and there's still all kinds of stuff in it from moving whatever that's fine because i found another 6l90 uh that we're supposed to go pick up tomorrow so we're yanking this out now unprepared ill-equipped but we're gonna do it anyway but first we have to put more hydraulic fluid in the lift because i haven't done that yet what are you doing with plank why was he on the ground um i wondered that too and i realized that travis probably put him there whenever he ran the um the lift wiring along that ledge do you want me to do it yeah okay okay here you go blank i'm gonna put that somewhere we're hanging up all these banners and she started hanging up off the doctor's office and we didn't have like we need to get some string or something to tie from pole to pole so we can like tie them to the string but she tried to make it nice and surprised me with available products anyway which is duct tape and it didn't really hold it that well but you tried and thought counts yep i appreciate you get this dusty thing pushed back into the lift slot for the inaugural hoisting actually manhandling the monte carlo into its place you know i'm really grateful that this car is so easy to push i'm used to shoving the escalade around by myself this thing's like half an escalade i say that as a joke is this car i think weighs 3 600 pounds with me in it it's not that heavy it before i had a hood on it probably like 37 now because that's a really heavy hood i want to know if anybody else does this or if it's just me and a couple you guys who are some big brain people that don't have a lot of funnels laying around i use a cut up water bottle more than i use an actual funnel for a lot of things because i always got a water bottle nearby but you don't always have you don't always have an actual funnel so we're just gonna shove that right in there and pour some stuff in fluid added only some on the floor we got some on the floor just so we would know there's actually fluid in there because if there wasn't any on the floor i would think it's empty so let's see if it works [Music] i'm not sure how weight distribution and stuff goes i've never put a car on this lift before it seems to be okay to me so those of you who remember the transmission filler in this thing was quite violent catastrophic have not had it up in the air to actually examine what happened yet so this will be interesting wow do you remember when this thing blew up yeah you were very angry the whole tail shaft broke off honestly this transmission is probably fine like clutch wise and everything inside i could get it rebuilt with a new tail shaft and output shaft and it should be okay but first step to getting this thing out is one probably getting some light under here two putting it back down to disconnect the battery which i actually i think it's already disconnected yeah it is but normally you would disconnect the battery three pull the starter pretty easy to do right there uh i don't know it was just it wasn't just like fell off it never had a through bolt it just has thick thread so it would thread right into that hole yeah and it just kind of pulled out should probably undo this stud here to get this out of the way it might be holding some weight still i'm really not sure um don't know i think it is a little bit it doesn't look like it messed up the cross member at all which is good yeah it's still holding some weight there we go this will be fun because i don't have any kind of transmission jack what i asked her if she was okay to handle that table herself i'm just over here explaining something and i'm watching you ballroom dance with a 10 foot tall table this is one of those times where i can't go help i guess we'll get mad i got it all right well i started to undo don't walk under the transmission it's precarious right now i took this bolt out because i thought if it was holding weight it would just stay there anyway well it fell down like another two inches and actually wedged the impact in there i pulled it out but it's occurred to me that we're gonna have to find a way to support this thing faster than what i had anticipated so what we're gonna do is the reasoning for logan struggling with that table over there is we're gonna take that table put it under here lower the car until some of the transmission is supported by said table and then undo the stuff pick the car back up to continue working i'm thinking we'll also use that table to get the transmission out but we'll save that fiasco for uh when the time comes so here's what we've got going on here 22 ton bus jack stand on a wooden table we're just going to lower it down until it starts to take some weight off the tail shaft what am i supposed to do just film the jack stand and transmission i'm gonna move this back just a little bit that'll be fine this looks like some really hot it is we don't have the right stuff to do this so we have to get creative if aliens can build the pyramids we can get a transmission out without a transmission jack well dang now we're gonna go back up get the crossmember out because now there's no more weight on it i don't know what to do with this anybody want it you want to frame it yeah we can frame it hang it up something put it in a glass box it's actually pretty cool i think you could make something cool out of it yeah like uh you could make me another rose you know the valentine's present yeah you want to tell them what i did with that the first time broken parts he made me a really cool rose out of escalade parts yup uh burned up broken planetary gears take note guys now let's pick this back up and see what happens show the transmission in case it falls out of the car i want to see it bust through the table i know you don't want that but it'd be so funny [Music] do you think you can handle getting the miscellaneous things unbolted from here i don't know i don't know it looks really hard that's what she said i can't say it running joke in the very early days i would make that's what she said jokes that she would go no to you be funny she wouldn't say it this time back when i did this swap in 2017 uh me and like one of my friends built this whole car in like a month did the whole swap including making a new transmission tunnel and everything i just cut up the original cable mount and like you know cut this leg off and moved it over and bolted it onto that and it works fairly well enough to make it work funny the thing is it did work with the gate alignment for set up for a 4l80 sort of but uh we weren't exactly sure because the transmission in here was like half blown up so just to eliminate that that the shifter was in in between gates uh we took the gate plate out so that shifter in there just it just flaps whatever you could accidentally bump this thing into park going 100 miles an hour what did you need i needed a 14 millimeter shallow socket in the middle drawer it's not gonna be in the little one yeah yeah so the shifter is basically just a fancy pto cable for now we're still going to manual swap this car we're just getting it ready for race week now yep this actually technically is 9 16 but this it's kind of the same as a 14. some of you guys probably know this but a lot of you may not think about it you can take these little like hex bits here and get a quarter inch socket and then use them on a ratchet same thing for the ratchet wrench too if you're in a bit of a tight spot you can do that damn you have to take like the whole car apart for this pretty much yeah see there's like nine million holes in here from the different configurations so i actually labeled this one 6l because there's i noticed that yeah this is like 6l8090 hole there's a freaking turbo 400 hole there's a muncie hole there's a lot of holes for a lot of configurations and the same crossmember gets used for all of it i've just modded it every time and i got to use these weird spacers because of the frame rail this the stamped old car nonsense it's freaking oh you already did that yep this thing's ready to come out i just want to practice good nut discipline and put these back together where's the other knife right there i found it that's what i did so you can see these original two holes would have been for like the turbo 400 and muncie and one of these holes i think the back ones for the 6l90 and then i just drilled another one for the 6l80 but to make it work for that i used the factory truck um transmission pedestal which is only one hole so i just welded a piece of steel to this crossmember and drilled a new hole in it so if i ever need to use the crossmember for another two-hole thingy i will drill two more holes here wow straight out of 1972. oh it's getting the converter bolts out now thankfully there's only three of them i really should just unbolt the whole starter instead of letting it flop around on the wires because it can pull the terminals out which happened to me last time i did this so i redid it real quick and that's fine it's okay i'm glad there's only three of these instead of six like i'm used to probably do this better with a better combination of sockets and extensions and stuff but this gets them out it's really easy so cool look how much room you have to like do stuff in here yep it's lots of stuff hey just look up there and i see a supercharged ls motor and i'm just like no this car needs an sb2 or an r07 but those are like way more expensive and harder to find so we're gonna say sp2 in here but if someone had an r07 was like yeah i'll trade you a six two four six two and a blower for this nascar engine and play yeah here you go you can have the 6l90 too i'm totally being serious using these new tecton tools for the first time the first actual work to be done in the new shop check it out wow what do you want to talk about nothing butterflies no ice cubes no dirt no let's talk about the dirt here in north carolina it's red it looks like oklahoma dirt and we both thought that was weird because i've never seen red dirt anywhere else cue comments of all kinds of people the dirt thread my personal experience i have not seen it anywhere else this is not a tecton tool it would probably be easier if it was shameless blood we are almost ready to yank this thing the converter bolts are out we just have to do the bell housing bolts which there's only four of them yeah four there's supposed to be more but i don't use the tippy top one because it sucks and the other one i don't know i guess it just only has four and that's just how it's gonna be so i'm gonna take the top two out leave the bottom two lower this thing onto the table waddle under here and do the other ones and see if that will get it off but we already got the ones off the oil pan also i would like to add do you understand the shirt choice today if you don't it doesn't make sense when pictured with the car fun fact these shirts are designed to tribute dale earnhardt's picture uniforms from 1988-89 you can get yours at stabletonautoworks.com along with these new hats we had released a matching hat with this with this shirt before they sold out really quickly so we did a different run these ones have the suck it on there and they're flex fit so those will be on the website too stapleton autoverse.com link is in the description pin in the comment get one help this car go faster and maybe have an sp2 sell a lot of shirts to buy one of those but i'm not giving up on that dream so let's yank this thing out find out if this table will collapse or not i want to see it snap in half we're gonna lower this onto the table i wish i had some kind of like sub table to put this on but there's nothing really in here i'd be willing to sacrifice as a sub table that would get dirty so we're just going to lower it now remember i left the bottom two bolts in and i'll do those once it's resting on there but we're not gonna completely lay it on there because the weight uh once it's resting on something it'll still be hooked onto the dowels in the back of the engine we're gonna get it on there and then lightly aggressively pop it off it'll probably plop down a couple inches and that'll be logan's favorite part and we'll find out if table breaks or not [Music] why notice me not stopping oh no oh the humanity that's the hindenburg you guys even know about the hindenburg and you logan you know what the hindenburg is i told you about the hindenburg like a month ago who knows what the hindenburg is leave a comment hindenburg history crew because there was a news broadcast and it was going down where the guy's going oh the humanity he pulled that plug out of the way yeah there you go out of the squish zone here moment of truth you're gonna have to sit on your butt to do that okay we got a good bit of weight settled in when we just needle ski on in here so it's kind of like working on the floor but not i'm gonna need a different socket i'll take this one what do you want maybe it will uh deep well 15 on a ratchet okay so it just crawled out getting the last bolt out of there the transmission is completely free blow it down a little bit more okay where do you want me to go okay film the table transmission and stuff are you sure the table's not bad or not too far forward it's good now okay it's pretty loose now i think the engine is actually gonna plop down now let's pick the car up and the transmission should stay on the table and the engine will plop down probably uh aggressively ready yeah [Music] no it's still there it goes i'm backing up i could make this better but there's no theater in that so let's see what happens [Music] did it work or did it work it did but the cardboard didn't work well that's okay no what who's gonna plop it down in the blood well then come up with a better solution we have lots of cardboard i don't know i i would just think you'd wipe this somewhere with what i don't know my favorite towels that's a waste of paper towels look at this gross cardboard it'll soak it up okay or smash it into the table more oh god it's not gonna break the middle of the table if anything the legs would give out it's like flexing the wood though how long does that take like an hour if that stopping and filming stuff too yeah it's pretty easy that's the converter from the escalade which is entirely too big for this car like it's like a 3800 stall this car does not need that but i don't want to buy another converter so it's going to go back in well there it is the 6l80 that we bought in kansas that lasted uh three miles i think anybody in north carolina or like spartanburg greenville anywhere in the vicinity of charlotte than a reasonable driving distance that can rebuild this thing let me know because this you know might as well rebuild it it's all there uh i have that one too so you could have two of them maybe saving feature projects or something i'm gonna get to editing this video now so it can be up uh tomorrow for you guys because we're getting back in the regular groove here tomorrow after we go to the gym because that's what we do every morning we will go to uh north wilkesboro and get the new transmission it's known as the 6l90 that one's an 80. i just happened to find it 90. decent price guy on the phone didn't sound like a wacko so i think we'll use that one we're going to put that in tomorrow too i don't know it depends when we get back or how we're feeling and um at least get it up enough to measure for a drive shaft get that going we could be driving this car within a week that's i think that should be the goal do you think we can do it yeah do you actually think we can do it i think it all depends on where you get the drive shaft you can do it fast i feel like that's the real issue that's true might take a couple days might take a week just to get a drive shaft but we'll shop around and find one that works i'm a girl so they won't do anything about it yeah we did that on the thumbnail once where like she pretended to have the transmission as a dick and that was fine but then i did it and the video got demonetized like it's some crap man i don't know how that works but they could suck it what you got your shirt dirty you know where you can get another one stabletonautoworks.com but we don't have any smalls oh that's right
