What happens here

This video documents the process of replacing a 6L90 transmission in a supercharged Monte Carlo and beginning the installation of a custom "boom tubes" exhaust system. It covers the acquisition of a used transmission, preparation steps like torque converter installation, removal of a stuck dowel pin, and the use of a clever makeshift transmission jack. The video also details the initial mock-up and strategic planning for the custom exhaust, including expert consultation.

this is some yeehaw stuff right here on the hunt for a new 6l90 for the monte carlo found one we are on the way to the um the junkyard now to go pick it up hopefully as long as it's good it's probably good the guy on the phone sounded all right target acquired seems to be good it's more expensive than i wanted to spend on one of those things but you know what we need one so i just had to do it be like that sometimes brought it back to the shop put this thing back on the table the handy dandy table yep for those of you that think he's stupid and just go buy a transmission jack he already bought one we're waiting for it to come here yeah it's not gonna be it's not gonna be delivered for like another week but we can't afford to wait for that because we're trying to do race week with this thing if you've never seen this car before it is lsa supercharged 6.2 liter original engine from my escalade btr stage 3 cam lsa blower 245 upper pulley stock truck lower pulley we have a fluid amp or lower pulley for this thing which is a little bit bigger um but we're not going to put that on yet because we have to make it work first uh that's pretty much the setup in here it went 1188 in the escalade at 5700 pounds at like 117 miles an hour this car should be pretty fast once it actually works oh my god i wish the camera it wasn't yes i hope that was on there if it was i'm gonna leave it cause that was a good one that was so funny yeah this thing's straight out of the truck right i'm not going to clean it off are we going why don't we use some of those like zip wipes they're right there we could yeah do you want to get it on the table first i'll clean it okay also i think the game plan for this car some of you guys said in the comments that um we're going to convert to a manual i've been looking into that the nissan option for those of you who know what i'm talking about right now that's the that's the top contender so we'll see how that plays out this is the same converter from the escalade too i'm not gonna add any more fluid to it because it's fine it's already has fluid in it two that may have been the third actually yeah i think we skipped the first click it went right through it you should hear kind of like three different levels of engagement when you do this and if you're not sure if it's all the way to the back you can put your hand behind here and feel it and it'll be like no room for your fingers to get in to the actual um converter hub pump drive thing yeah you immediately hold the table if it doesn't move yeah that might be a good this is some yeehaw stuff right here i just noticed one of the dowels came out with the old transmission we're gonna have to get that out of there and put that back in or lining this thing up it's not gonna work right there's our dowel remember this half on that uncle rob too yeah this is an authentic bullet from the civil war we found it in the dirt here because now we're in the confederacy there's a couple of vice grip marks on this thing it's been stuck before you just don't want to do everything but film today don't you i'm filming you what are you doing also taking off i'm over here trying to explain stuff and she's just like holding the camera like picking stuff off not even paying attention to me because i am paying attention to you i'm listening let's just start lowering the car uh explain what this happened no she wanted to sit under the car and watch it just to make sure it was in the right place which i applaud but i don't trust the lift as much as she does she's like what are these things gonna just break out of nowhere well no they're not supposed to but the metal is not just going to snap if it would have snapped it would have snapped with one of the pieces triple seven put on there well let's lower this thing down see if it does better this time you're fine oh you're not fine oh god ow can i stay here now oh no i died this transmission connector almost did it's all close it's not really at the right angle you want your hands and knees it's funny yeah i know it just needs to get tilted up okay well let's put something under the front end to tilt it up yeah no big deal i just grabbed the tail shot and started pushing it around and i got on the dowel so got to make sure none of those wires up there are pinched we'll put a couple of those bell housing bolts in tighten them down and then pick the car up and do the rest of them did you get it [Music] you can see the original color green that this thing used to be right here must have had some paint work done on this fender back in the day [Music] could have worn a hat like this like this hat which you can get on stapletonautoworks.com check it out proceeds of this hat go towards getting this thing an sb2 or something sweet like that do you feel accomplished no they said the truck that this came out of was in a really hard uh kind of rear end sideways-ish collision like it messed up the rear axle and stuff and the trans mount was on this transmission it's half ripped good thing we don't need to use it there's also a dent here from something banging into it i swear i swear if we drive three miles and this thing blows up again and it has nothing to do with me being negligent i i might just put this car in a barn and let myself find it once i start to have dementia because i don't think i could handle that heartbreak again i just couldn't do it i gotta get this off um get that off put the new bracket on here get everything plugged in while it's easy to reach you know what i just realized once we get everything bolted up and the crossmember in we measure for a drive shaft and everything you know we could start doing boom tubes oh yeah now i'm really excited because yeah i want to wait until the drive shaft is in there to do it final but we have another drive shaft laying there that we could just kind of a fix up there for mock-up to make sure the exhaust is running away that won't be anywhere near that which i don't think it'll get in the way anyway but we can start getting to work on the boom tubes the special x-pipe are you pumped [Music] i'm afraid this thing might be too loud for you to want to ride in it if i remember correctly something on the power steering leaks on this car i don't know exactly what it is but we'll find out once it starts running again converter bolts right now got everything else pretty much plugged in good to go we'll get those thrown in real quick both the cooler lines back up and get the cross member in got everything pretty much uh set up here i gotta cut this you know zip tie things out of the way so it doesn't melt standard protocol now i'm thinking about something i could put on here to pick this up so i can get the crossmember in and i'm thinking that shopvac do the job it's pretty sturdy what are you working on one of these for you desk stuff sorry about your shelf it's for you i know just help me fill this real quick so i can get the cross member in because i want to see if we can test fire with the boom tubes mocked up no promises but we're gonna see if we can that seems sketchy yeah oh god do you see it flexing yeah it needs to be like on wheels or something your mom is cringing i gave you this vacuum and here you are ruining it you know what i just thought of instead what you can use that card we'll take the toolbox off put the back of the card on and then it will roll as the transmission pivots i think this is a little bit better option the problem is when it's going down it's wanting to push it's wanted to go like that because the slide angle is changing so this card is on wheels so when it grabs this the cart will just roll as the transmission comes up it's working is that not exactly what i said would happen it is i just noticed i wonder what the manufacturing process for this thing was because it looks like it started life with a straight piece and then got shoved into some machine and just crushed around until it was in the right shape yeah does it not look like it does it's just like that it kind of looks like those lines on the transmission that we're cutting like pinched together yeah the ends right here it's all kinked and stuff gm's just like yup that's how we do it sends it out the door people will still be using it in 40 years they could suck it i remembered i have to have the transmission pad off to get the crossmember in i was also trying to put it in upside down i realized that now yeah then we're gonna put these in each side gets two bolts the thin spacer goes on the back side and the big one goes on the front crossmember's bolted up now we can lower it down get this in here also wearing a hat saves the top of your head from getting absolutely obliterated by things that stick off the bottom of the car all right the crossmember bolts in that thing are the most like just not good part of that because they're just a hole in the frame rail with some pulse i got a rope thing that are way too long i have clean knuckles now gotta have them clean filament knuckles thank you everything's bolted up we're gonna hook the battery back up and see if this thing will fire up do you think it's gonna start or is the battery gonna be dead there's a high chance the battery's dead possibly it's been unhooked this whole time so we'll see i hooked you back up and heard stuff click do you want to do you want to do the honors turn the key do it yeah i can park we don't want it to drive away you know now that it's off the ground and has no drive shaft it could totally drive away turn the key and see if the fuel pump primes try it nothing nothing it's dead well dang where's that excess power battery charger we'll uh we'll hook it up come back in a couple minutes it should be good to go charging up this xs power intellicharger it's a freaking hog i use excess power batteries and stuff not this because i've had this battery forever but it'll have an excess power battery in it at some point let's try it again i don't know how long we've been here maybe half hour or so should be enough to give it some sauce [Music] i didn't expect it to be that loud i like it well dang why'd you turn it off so fast it was cool it was cool but i want to do that okay fair enough let's do that basically what we got going on here uh i can already tell i'm gonna have to take some distance out of here to get that angle right to get to work with the x pretty much all we got to do is mess with those two pipes to get the x to go up because everything after the x through the tube is predetermined and then not right now but eventually the tubes will look the slash cut and read the right angle i just had a spider drop right in front of me kill it it's right there kill it what the that's as is as it can go so we got the stuff kind of mocked up to the best of our ability um we're not gonna get to hear it with this tonight because i don't want to start cutting things and then not have it be the way we want it so but you got to mock it up first to see what you're working with as right now it's just ratchet strapped up there hitting the cross member all that stuff i need to figure out where the x-pipe needs to go in relation to how the boom tubes stick out how much they stick out if i have to make longer intermediate pieces to get this to be more forward i'm thinking i'm gonna have to lengthen that move the x forward to allow these to spread apart farther as they continue going so that there's enough meat to cut as little as possible off here to get the right angle and still have it poke out a little bit because the body line of this car really wraps under there you want it to have some poke so you can freaking see it all things to figure out i took a bunch of pictures i sent them to um dr gas junior to call him the guy who worked for the original dr gas guy then bought the company from when uh the main dude retired sent him a bunch of pictures i'm gonna call him see what he thinks because i don't want to screw up the sound i want to make sure i do this right and we will go from there so i think we got a lot done today also the drive shaft in there is zip tied for mock-up reference who the heck is calling me oh it's it's dr gas junior there he is hello hey well it's william what's going on i'm actually was just filming an explanation of what we're doing right here and i'm like i was interrupting yeah oh i'll talk to there no you're not you're not interrupting whatever you're gonna explain would might be helpful to the video yeah okay um yeah so you plan on trimming those right the boom tubes yeah i want to trim them so that they are parallel to the rocker but i want them to stick out enough that they can be seen under the car because of the body line it really wraps under so they got a little bit of poke to look good yeah um well yeah so what you do is once you establish the line that you want you'll use a straight edge or just something and then take it like a uh sharpie and you'll draw a line and then when you take them back off do you have like some type of table saw a way to cut those yeah there's like a whole fab shop next to me so we can find a way to cut it straight okay so what you do is uh if perfectly a table saw you'll saw within that sharpie line so when you do that you just take your time put on i actually put it like reading glasses and then uh i'll go within that sharpie line that way there's no like waves or distortion then once you get past it and then you can take like a belt sander and clean them up any any waves because they won't be perfect like when you cut them by hand and then you just clean them up uh some type of belt sander works pretty well okay and then uh yeah i'm thinking i may have to extend the pipe between the x and the boom tubes a little bit to get the width all the way out before i can make the cuts because i don't right now um it doesn't really get that far it's kind of like running into the tire so there's a couple tricks you can do you can over expand them i don't know if there's an expander and that's the actual uh where i expanded the ends and that way you can get there's more um area to move them as well as another way of i'll see you like over expand it and push them apart and then weld it just fill in the gap yep the gap and then if you pull the whole thing off you just tack weld that once everything's just tack weld it then drop the whole thing and then weld it off the car and that way if there is a gap you can even like weld one side up to get this warm and then take a hammer and just basically tap in the um the gap there and then uh because it'll be soft once it's hot and then you can fill it in without having to try to build up a lot of weld do you want to explain to these people why this stuff is mild steel and not stainless so they don't ask me yeah the reason why is during nascar days uh one team that boyd actually told me tried stainless the problem was stainless it does not do very well on flat surfaces so such as these boom tubes you have a tendency to have uh potential cracks so two full races on a dr gas system would be equivalent to about a million miles so mild steel is really was i mean the strength of it the the ability to basically move around uh flexibility of it kind of reduces those potential hairline cracks stress points are kind of reduced too so stainless is just not a good idea in flat surfaces especially boom tubes and so after two races they redeemed them pretty bad and they were just worn out a million miles so there's a little surplus left with dr gass out there but they're worn out and uh so after two races we were contracted to replace them um and when they pulled the old set off we put the new one on and it was good for approximately two races hmm now with the the x-pipe if you want that to be as close to the collector as possible don't you yes the reason why is what happens is you have a pulse that comes through and if the pulse should pull a vacuum on the other outbound pulse that's making its way on the other side so it's supposed to assist and synchron in fact before they coined the term x-pipe it's called a synchronizing crossovers and so those pulses help scavenge they help pull a vacuum on each inbound uh pulse that's right before the hole there in the x-pipe and so for example if you have like a mustang a new mustang they uh unfortunately the x-pipe is so far back and what happens is that's the reason why they sound like ball ping hammers especially with aftermarket is you have two pulses colliding together right there at the hole and they basically ricochet and bounce off and gives that kind of a crackling verbally sound that's an improper x-pipe and so up close if a better chance the scavenging points are better should i extend those intermediate pipes to move the x kind of under the cross member then i have more root more separation for the boom tubes that they're farthest point before they get cut yes exactly so if you may uh if you have to move forward even where i may have expanded if you feel like you can cut that and re-expand to go to the collectors you want to do everything possible to have enough ground clearance and make sure obviously it doesn't rub um so a car like that you want it right at the tail drive shaft at the back of the trans right there if possible and then uh if you have to extend those pipes the back two pipes off the x to extend them you may only need to add two to three inches of straight okay yeah and yeah so it depends on your skill level you can actually butt join them together without expanding that way you're not having so you know a couple expansions uh back there you can do that or you can span on the slider man um cut them and then figure out where you need to trim but yeah so a couple tricks you can over expand those two ends of the buildings themselves you can make those slightly water that will wait or some flexibility yeah i think i think i had the right idea then i just wanted to make sure before actually doing something about it but this seems to be very loud what you have is extremely loud but it's going to sound good but x-pipe is going to be really i mean if it's set correctly this will be very pronounced it would be very defined let's just say i don't know i'm excited here that's why i figured i was gonna try to mock it up real quick but it doesn't doesn't quite work that way so i'm actually gonna have to do it and do it right before i get to hear it which is probably the right way right thing to do anyway we will resume this for the next video so if you're new here if you're not new here just check anyway make sure you subscribe click the little bell so you get a notification when we post something i hope you like that information from straight from the source on this stuff we're taking it seriously are you excited i'm excited now it's my turn your turn for what no project you already know what kind of car you want but i kind of wonder what kind of car they think you want yeah i'm curious too let's let's profile logan what kind of project car does she want should we give them any direction whatsoever as to the type like the genre well they know my suv choice yeah so the project is not that we'll say the project is a muscle car of some capacity some capacity what is it what year range what color what do you see her driving what's under the hood leave a comment make your predictions and if enough people are right maybe uh we'll consult you to help us find one let's check out some of the merch that we've been talking about everything is kind of a mess right now we're sort of reorganizing and and all that uh there's one small one small pit crew shirt left yeah now that's a it hung in a seat in the monte carlo the entire drive here fun fact yup so that one's got it's got history it was there i put it like over the seat dale earnhardt looking 1988 style pit crew shirt we got those we got some of the american flag flag…
