Helping My Neighbor Install a 50-Gal Rheem Gas Water Heater

What happens here

First, check the house water pressure by screwing a 'Watts' pressure checker onto an outdoor hose bib. Record the reading (e.g., 70 PSI). Next, connect a 'Topeak' floor pump to the expansion tank's Schrader valve and inflate the tank to match the recorded house water pressure. This ensures the expansion tank can properly absorb pressure fluctuations.

Goal: Match the expansion tank's pre-charge pressure to the house water supply pressure.

Tools and materials

  • Expansion Tank Therma-Gard — Absorbing thermal expansion in the water system
  • Topeak Floor Pump Topeak — Inflating the expansion tank
  • Watts Pressure Checker Watts — Measuring house water pressure
