Apply a thin, consistent bead of white acrylic latex caulk along the seams of your trim where it meets the wall or other trim pieces. Once a bead is applied, immediately take your wet finger and smooth out the caulk bead. Wipe any excess caulk off your finger onto the wet sponge, keeping the sponge wet and clean as you work. For corners or hard-to-reach areas (like inside a closet), you can use your wet finger and the sponge to work the caulk into the seam, ensuring a nice, full, and smooth corner. The key is to keep the caulk wet and workable; if it starts to dry, it becomes difficult to smooth. You can always apply more caulk and re-do a section if needed.
