HANGING BED. How to make a bed that hangs from a ceiling. Making a swinging bed.

the idaho painter we've got a really cool project we're doing here on the weekend and we're making a hanging bed i'm going to show you the process how you can make a really cool hanging bed and so we went down to our local hardware store bought the wood in the lumber and all you need to make to make this hanging bed is wants to be hanging from the ceiling from with rope uh we needed eight pieces of one by eight pine we bought eight or five two by fours to actually build the frame right here and then the rope that this thing's actually going to be hanging from the ceiling with is this right here this jute rope right here we gotta suspend the thing from the ceiling hang up on the ceiling so we had some nuts and bolts here here just got these like uh eye i guess you call them let's see screw eyes right here and these things are gonna screw into the two by four into the ceiling and that's what the bed is gonna be hanging from so we purchased four of those and then we actually had uh four of these right here they are called i bolt with knot right here that thing right there we got four of those and then we got some deck screws to screw this thing together with we just purchased some two inch deck screws to screw the the top down and then to screw the frame together we've got i think they're what size they are three and a half inch dextrose just a simple deck screw self tapping screw makes it easy to screw together some of the tools that we're gonna be using to build this project we got a miter saw set up here so we can get some really straight good good straight cuts we got our drill um definitely you'll definitely need a tape measure to measure all your cuts we've got a square to just uh draw our cuts to make sure they're nice and straight and i think that's we've got a sander set up over here hemi the sander we're gonna be sanding this thing when it's all put together to make it look nice and so stay tuned that's all the stuff that we purchased to make this hanging bed this is gonna be a really cool project so stay tuned so we're starting this project off by just building the frame underneath and the frame is out of two by fours the one by eights go over the top that's our platform so we measured it out our frame is actually going to be 55 inches wide by 74 inches long so we're making those cuts and we're going to screw that together [Music] [Applause] [Music] now we're going to lay our bed frame out we're going to screw this thing together now so we're going to start off by screwing this bed frame together just got a square right here to make sure our you start off getting the same square and we're just using our self-tapping deck screws so we're gonna put two screws for each corner so now we're going to make the top of the bed right here and we're going to have an inch overhang all the way around so we're just going to measure our frame right here what's the measurement there 77. so we got 77 inches and we're going to add an inch we want an inch overhang all the way around so 77 78 79 so we want our we want our 1 by 8 pine to be 79 inches long so we're going to cut those at 79 and then we'll begin screwing them on here so now we're getting our first board set up we're just going to measure we want an inch overhang all the way around so i'm just measuring an inch and then we're going to screw it in we got an inch on all sides right here we'll put in a few screws to start off with just one screw to start off with so we forgot one of our our center piece right here that actually supports the bed so we've got to just measure that out and then we're going to cut that and install that [Applause] so now we're going to measure out all of our top pieces we've determined they're going to be 79 inches so we're going to cut um enough of them just to cover this we're going to have a gap in between all of them to uh because you don't need it to be butted up against each other that way you can actually save some weight [Music] so i got this one by eight and this miter saw actually won't cut a one by eight so when i'm when i cut down then i'm just gonna raise the board up to finish the cut [Music] so now we got our wood laid out on here we're gonna get our two ends done and then just kind of eyeball the gap in between these this doesn't need to be perfect because the bed's gonna be sitting on it and you can't tell so i got afton over there she's finishing screwing the top planks in and i'm just gonna we're gonna begin taking our sander and just sanding the edges of all these boards because they're actually kind of sharp and you know a little bit rough on the ends so we wanted to be nice and smooth so it doesn't catch your clothes or doesn't scratch you or cut you like the ends of these boards are sharp and when you're getting in the bed we don't want that to actually you know scratch or anything so we're just going to round off all the corners and round off all the edges with our orbital sander okay now we're going to install the eyelets in here that this thing is going to be hanging from and we're going to be drilling a hole right down through here we're going to go right through the 2x4 that's underneath here and then those eyelets are going to come up through here and that's where our rope's going to be looped and hanging to so i'm going to i've got to find the center of this 2x4 in here i'm just gonna be measuring taking some measurements this is the two by four is actually an inch it's an inch and a half wide and this thing is overhanging by an inch i'm gonna measure it in an inch and then measure my inch and a half and split that right in the middle and that's where i'll be drilling that hole so now i've got my hole drilled through here just going to stick our eye bolt right through there i'm going to put a washer on there then screw my nut on there and now it's going to hang just like that so now in order to hang this thing from our ceiling we need to know that because we got to know where to put the lag bolts up in the the ceiling so we need to know the distance between the two eyelet hooks here so measure put align the hook there right in the highlight hook so we got distance between our two eyelet hooks is 67 inches and then we want to know the width between the two of them also and that way we can try to locate studs that were that are you know approximately that distance so it would typically hang straight up but you definitely want to find a stud to lag this thing into because it's a lot of weight you can't just hang it into the drywall the next step of the process is actually uh putting our lag bolts up in the ceiling now and what we got to do is find something strong enough to actually you know hold this bed and so there's going to be you know studs or ceiling joists or rafters whatever you're looking for there's going to be some wood up in here that we can actually screw that thing to and just using a simple stud finder is the way you could locate that i'm just gonna measured out how far i want the bed to hang and took some measurements so you just got to make sure you get the measurements right where you actually want to screw this thing i'm just gonna be doing a hole you know right up in here i got a hole drilled there already just cleaned it out a little bit more then i'm going to be just screwing my eye lag in order to hang the bed we have to make an eye splice with a three strand rope and how i'm gonna do that and tie it right now [Music] so afton's made her little ice slices now we're just taking a quick link we're gonna hang the bed up here we got our [Music] lags up in the ceiling here screwed in now we're just going to take use these quick links right here to put through our loop i splice right here and then afton's going to hang that up in the ceiling so not an exacto knife but a snap knife just to cut this with just gonna be really careful it's a sharp blade we got our bed hanging here we're just just got regular overhand knots and we're just tying we're just adjusting this to the height we want it all the way around and the thing will be done there's different ways you can tie it but these this jute rope the overhand knot two overhand knots will work and then the bed if you do fine tune adjustments these screws you could on the bottom here but high holes you can adjust it to fine tune it
