Secure the shower pan to the wall studs. With the pan perfectly level and the drain connected, pre-drill a hole through the pan's top flange into each wall stud. It is essential to pre-drill to prevent cracking the fiberglass. After drilling, drive a flat-head stainless steel screw through the flange into each stud. Do not overtighten the screws; they should be snug enough to hold the pan firmly in place while the mortar cures.

Goal: Fasten the shower pan flange to the wall framing

  • Do not skip the pre-drilling step. Forcing a screw through the fiberglass will likely cause it to crack.
  • Support your body weight on the wall studs, not the shower pan, while working to avoid disturbing the fresh mortar bed.

FAQs

What is the most critical step to ensure a leak-free shower pan installation?

The most critical steps involve a thorough dry fit to confirm proper drain alignment and a securely sealed drain connection. Ensure the pan is set in a complete and solid bed of mortar, and all plumbing connections are sealed with appropriate compounds for long-term integrity.

How important is it to perfectly level the shower pan, and what happens if it's not?

Perfect leveling is crucial for proper water drainage. If the pan isn't perfectly level, water will pool in low spots instead of flowing to the drain, leading to mold, mildew, and potential subfloor damage. Use a reliable level and check it from multiple angles during the dry fit and after setting the pan.

What type of mortar should I use for setting the shower pan, and how do I mix it?

Use Type S mortar, like the Greencore 65 lbs. Type S Mortar listed, as it offers superior strength and bonding. Mix it according to the manufacturer's instructions to achieve a thick, peanut-butter-like consistency that is workable but firm enough to hold the pan's position without slumping.

What safety precautions should I take when installing a shower pan, especially regarding dust and materials?

Always wear work gloves, safety glasses, and a dust mask (such as the Dyiom or Paitning mask mentioned) when mixing mortar, cleaning the subfloor, or cutting materials. Ensure your work area is well-ventilated to minimize inhaling dust and chemical fumes for your safety.
