Remove Old Wooden Treads — Remove Old Treads
Part of project
Stair Treads · Step 1 of 6
In this video
With the new treads prepared, it's time to remove the old wooden treads that were beneath the carpet. Use a pry bar and hammer to carefully pry up each old tread from the stair stringers. The video shows the treads being removed one by one, exposing the framework beneath. Collect the removed treads and any remaining nails for disposal. After removing all old treads, clean up any debris, dust, or old adhesive from the stringers and risers, possibly using a vacuum or shop vac, to ensure a clean surface for the new tread installation.
