Step 9 · Apply Finish

Apply your chosen finish to the oak treads. This could be a clear polyurethane, varnish, or stain followed by a topcoat. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying times. Typically, multiple thin coats are better than one thick coat. Ensure you apply the finish evenly and allow adequate drying time between coats. Lightly sand with very fine-grit sandpaper (320-grit or higher) between coats for a smoother result, wiping with a tack cloth after each sanding.
