Step 1 · Remove Old Treads

Begin by inspecting how the current treads are attached. If they are nailed, use a pry bar to gently lift the tread. For treads glued down, you may need to score the joint with a utility knife and then pry. In some cases, cutting the tread into sections might be necessary to remove it without damaging the stringers. Ensure you work safely, protecting yourself from flying debris.
