Step 8 · Sand and Smooth

After the filler has dried, sand all the new oak treads. Start with a medium-grit sandpaper (e.g., 120-grit) to remove any high spots or excess filler. Progress to a finer grit (e.g., 180 or 220-grit) to create a smooth finish. Feather the edges of any filled areas into the surrounding wood. Also, sand any rough spots on the risers or stringers that are visible. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth.
