Step 9 · Mulch the Area

After planting and initial watering, apply a 1-2 inch layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark, wood chips, or straw, around the plants. Keep the mulch a small distance away from the base of the plants to prevent rot. Mulch helps to conserve soil moisture, suppress weed growth, and insulate the soil from temperature extremes, aiding plant establishment.
