Step 2 · Lay Out and Excavate Footings

Using the deck plan, precisely mark the locations for each footing. Dig holes for the footings, ensuring they extend below the local frost line to prevent heaving. The diameter of the holes should accommodate the footing form or concrete pier. Compact the soil at the bottom of each hole.
