Step 6 · Add and Level Sand Bed

Pour a 1-inch layer of coarse sand (paver sand or coarse masonry sand) over the compacted gravel base. Use screed rails (e.g., metal pipes or lumber) set at the desired finished height and a screed board to level the sand. Drag the screed board across the rails to create a smooth, level surface. Do not walk on or compact the sand after screeding.
