Step 2 · Excavate the Area

Using a shovel or a power auger (for larger areas or tougher soil), remove the existing gravel and soil within the marked perimeter. The excavation depth should be sufficient to accommodate the thickness of your concrete pavers, plus approximately 4-6 inches for the compacted gravel base, and about 1 inch for the leveling sand. Ensure the bottom of the excavated area is relatively level.
