What happens here

This project guides you through the process of installing a structural support system through a roof, focusing on both proper waterproofing (flashing) and secure load transfer to a bearing wall. It covers identifying the correct location, preparing the roof by removing shingles and cutting decking, installing the support post and flashing, and finally, securing the structural beam while ensuring all loads are correctly routed to the foundation.

Cutting a roof to install a skylift might seem risky, but this is not what I would be worried about. What matters is where the water goes and where the loads go. We'll plumb off our fascia, measure back to the structure. Now transfer your measurement over and add half of your stud width. Make a mark in the center of your bearing wall. Keep in mind, if you have vinyl or brick, you'll need to add to this measurement to get to the middle of the stud. Now we'll center our boot and see how [clears throat] many shingles we need to remove. Separate your shingles. When they're first installed, they don't stick. Once they heat up, this bonds these two shingles together. Here we want to pull this nail right here. Come below on top of a tooth right here. Find your nail and pry up. Now you can remove your nail. This one shingle had two rows of nails. Now I mark my initial hole. From our center [snorts] mark, we'll draw a 12 by 12 square. Remove decking and install skylift on top plate. Adjust it where you need, screw it down. Drill out the center of your decking and screw in some blocking. Now all sides has blocking and you can reinstall your decking. Install your bottom rows of shingles and cut around the pipe. Install your pipe boot. Be sure it goes under your top shingles. If the shingles are under the pipe boot, rain will run behind the boot and leak into your house. If these shingles overlap and get installed the right way, water will flow over the pipe boot down and away from the house. And water that goes down the bracket hits the rubber seal and it will run down. This is the same as a vent that goes up through your roof. Pop on the cap. Install your bracket. Get it to position, install your bolt, tighten it down, and then install your beam. The other style post and bracket system can be used for beams. Keeping water out is one thing, holding up thousands of pounds is another. The load travels from the top of the beam all the way down to the footing. For the house side, it goes across the beam, travels down the bracket, into your double top plate, and all the way down into your footings. And this gets installed with eight structural screws. Here's why it's important this gets attached to a load-bearing wall. Decking is weak. Fascia is weak. Your bearing wall is strong.
