What happens here

This project details the construction of a custom toddler princess bed, designed as a built-in bunk bed with stairs, storage drawers, and decorative arches, culminating in a starry light-up ceiling and a plush, upholstered headboard. The build involves extensive carpentry, basic electrical work for lighting, and custom finishing touches.

this is my daughter Harper and this is her little crib and clearly she's growing out of her crib so today we're going to build her a really cool princess bed that she has no idea about let's get [Applause] [Music] started I just learned that 10t boards are not exactly 10 ft tall I got to trim this one a little [Music] bit so the plan of attack I've built a few of these we're going to have a loft on top to play stairs coming off the sides uh this is about a 14 in off the ground plus the match up is going to be another what 6 7 in perfect for a little girl to climb in comfortable big girl bed uh this is going to be arched over and so will this the bed will go this way which is you know not the best they usually fit it but this is like what I calls a reverse L well an hour we're into the build and uh I already screwed up this is supposed to be out here because those was the stairs so I'm going to have to cut this piece off move this here and then build it separately essentially making a little more narrow one mistake down plenty more to go we got our basic structure here so what I need to do now is create a platform to go out that will build out for the mattress I'm literally just like winging this I didn't even make any [Music] plans so originally I thought it would look really cool if I just had a supporting bracket here and make this kind of look like a floating bed but then I thought there's going to be kids jumping on this and that might not hold up too well so what I'm going to do is keep it more of like a built-in look so I'm going to put another part below here and then box it all out so it'll look like it's part of the structure versus like looking like it's just a bed that's tucked in underne I think I just broke the record for the Royal's large Splinter well it doesn't look that big now trust me it was huge it like this long now that we got the whole thing framed out it's time to start wrapping it I'm choosing to go with MDF just cuz I don't need the structural support of plywood and it's a lot more inexpensive and it's a lot easier to paint and to save a little bit more coin for the stuff that doesn't need too much structural backbone I'm using half inch MDF and for the stuff that needs a little more o we'll use 3/4 let's slice [Music] now I'm not going to pull the whole overprotective D thing but with a paie overhead I think it might be a good idea to throw some screws on there just for support so I'm getting ready to start wrapping the sides of this uh I am going to put cleats down here so I have to count whatever this height plus another 3/4 but I also needed to go a little a little bit higher to maybe an inch so that the mattress doesn't get pushed off it's Arch time oh in case you don't know what happened to my voice if you haven't seen my last video I got an U restes for it's annoying I feel like I was like a rock concert but when it comes to actually doing the Arts we have our center part here that we need to be beautiful radius so put a screw down the middle here wrap string around it create a loop for the pencil to drag with and from where we start to all day around it's going to give us one perfect cut well one perfect tracing at least then we'll cut it [Music] [Applause] [Music] guys we going to take a quick break from building this bunk bed and talk to the sponsors of today's video Epson with it being a new year and a small business owner it's important for me to upgrade my business operation to make sure everything's running Flawless well that's where the Epson ecotank Pro comes in not only is it the fastest ecotank printer Epson has ever made but one of my favorite features was my previous printer I was constantly replacing these ink cartridges but with epson's ink bottles I never have to replace another ink cartridge ever again and the printer comes with a lot of ink making my life so much easier and the image quality speaks for itself this is on regular paper not even glossy paper now let me show you how quickly printing invoices can be ready 3 2 1 beautiful let's go get paid so click the link down description below pick yourself up the epon eot tank Pro and make your business operating smoothly now let's go back to building or bunk bed quickly I'm realizing we're basically drama theater set Builders that's what we are now on our next edition of Schindler's List I don't know I don't know any plays is John Wick is John Wick a play it should be that's the one you should watch as a play John Wick what say we start figuring out how to actually create some stairs so the kiddo can go up top so on the previous bunk bed that I've built see here here that has stairs I decided to frame out the whole thing with 2x4s and that was a lot harder than it should be cuz you can't keep it consistent so I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to cut my sheet of MDF down stack them together like a sandwich and then measure out all my risers for them that way it'll be completely perfect mirror image of each other we can connect them together and then at that point we can actually have drawers that pull out let's slice I'm trying to use this online staircase calculator and it's not working for some reason maybe I'm just dumb but regardless this has to be the maximum drop off because the ledge is 63 which gives them about 12 in to get down to the first step so I have to consider this to be the first step and then work my way out it's it's like doing long division and you're hungry and the car is on fire we'll figure it out got a solution 12 risers 10 across all the way up the last one's going to be about 12 in oh or the last one's going to be about 2 in over and then that'll give us another 16 for them to climb in it should work not a perfect solution but it'll be too much expensive to get another sheet and just make it even longer besides I don't want the staircase to be super long all right we're again somewhere here's the general gist of it I'm treating like a cabinet so it's going to have a bottom sides back and then these are going to come on top of the stairs going to pocket all these together sandwich the sucker together and then we'll be able to start working on the steps and the cabinet drawers and all that fun stuff but lots of pocket [Music] holes all right this thing is coming together it looks great we have our sections for the drawers now for anybody in the comment section it's going to be like oh MDF now they're going to hold up it's going to be perfectly strong besides all the strength is going to come from these stringers so I'm going to have stair treads on top solid wood so it's going to distribute the weight there and uh this is basically one giant cabin here's our next hurdle stairs are going in here the second step is going to be blocking this electrical box we can't have that we have two options we can either move it up here which you're like why do you need an outlet on the stairs you don't we have an outlet here we'll make something cool out of it so the only thing I'm going to do to make sure it's safe is uh take this receptacle off and turn into a dunum box cover it up cover up the wires and then we can slide this thing in here boy this is not going to be easy for me is it so the lower uh trip piece right here the 1X two is sticking out I need to clear about an extra half an inch I'm might have to do this a hard way maybe lift it up clear that and slide it in and uh in the process not break my back which if we captur it on YouTube that'd be cool stupid trim piece okay think think [Music] think all right I think we got it positioned exactly how we want it let's start screw some holes in through the side here make sure it doesn't move and then some on this side we'll be ready for trim [Music] so you might be thinking this base of the bed is might be a little Overkill with all these reinforcements well I got three kids and if I uh know one thing they're going to do extreme things here so they're going to climb on those steps as the way I'm anticipating and then Cannonball right on here and um we're going to be ready for anything at least that's what I would do [Music] oh this is nice okay this time I actually do have to go get face frames for this trim everything out well let's do face frames then we'll do drawers then we'll trim this might be the easiest and the simplest face frames I have ever made Let's Start measuring our [Music] [Applause] [Music] drawers uh million doll question do we edgeband all the edges or before we assemble them do we round them over real quick and just keep it simple all right first dra is done and the second and the third got the fourth Let's It Go stall all right I got my little jig that I made here and we got our drawer slides full extension anything for my baby girl Mount these suckers in what the heck I got some kind of dud all the ball bearings are out of this one somebody must have returned this sucks ah okay well let's install three drawers not four cuz I got to make another trip that's [Music] slick all the fun stops here let me go exchange this and uh hopefully they'll believe me that I was no one that broke this so I'm sing and I'm thinking is it appropriate to do the drawer faces now and I I and I realize it's not I I need to do the stair treads first so I know how much of a gap uh cuz then that might be a lot of a gap so let's do that and to save money and I love when I get sa that I'm going to Edge band just plywood I don't need to go buy real hard width Treads again kids room should be easy they weigh like a pound [Music] [Applause] you know to stay on topic with this whole plywood Edge band and saving money why don't we do the face frames the exact same way that will actually look a little more Flawless versus making fancy drawers we're not about that right now these drawer faces came out great they're about to go on I'm just finding the middle so I know where to attach the drawer poles and I'm doing that now because knowing when to attach the drawer PES also helps you install them cuz it temporarily holds them so you can secure them the back taking ahead line it in go to a hole put a set screw in this will hold it in place gently pull it out add an extra clamp for insurance and secure from the back don't do that take this out drill the pilot hole all the way through and now we can put our drawer PES and then rinse it repeat oh it's so slick it passes all the trimp pieces and if you're wondering and I bet you somebody's going to notice is they're like how are you going to get the the rug out of this thing well this thing has enough Flex that we can slide it out now how comfortable are you getting one underneath there uh less likely very less likely so one of the things in the design I'm noticing I don't love how there's nothing here functionally makes sense but almost looks like a fake stage uh design that they made so what I think I'm going to do is I'm going to put another Arch right here not as thick as this but just simple so it gives you that threedimensional look when you come from well that angle that you're at right now I am feeling good about this get that in there nice snug oh Bubba that's so slick that gives like a perfect three-dimensional look a feel oh that just goes to show just stick through it the design idea will come we'll get [Music] [Applause] there for this little border here I'm making an overlap about half an inch on the inside and maybe like an e/ in on the outside just to give it a little more depth that way it kind of pop for us by a smarter move if I put some glue in here first that way those miters will be [Music] tight and this is the part that I've been dreading this whole time how do I trim out an arch this stuff will snap if I try to bend it all right back to the drawing board all right I think this is going to work so what I've come up with I found some PVC trim 1X two obviously it was straight so then I had this idea what if I take a heat gun and start arching and melting it or bending it as long as it gets warm not it's not taking anything off and I clamped it essentially in here so I have an arch that I could attach without it snapping it came out really good I think what I got to do now is add some adhesive and then Brad nail it in and I don't think it should go anywhere but more than that I'm just excited that this actually worked out [Music] oh shoot that snapped oh okay maybe I can like cul it up or [Applause] okay I don't know how but we pulled it off and uh this is actually not bad but man we overcame our demons next up we got electrical here's the issue this is an iore nobody wants this right over their head so the solution that Irene and I came up with is we're going to have one giant headboard here like a a what are they called tufted tuft I I don't I don't know poolery so the headboard is going to be all cushioned here we can't have it be covering the outlet so this is going to be a junction box we'll cover that up we'll shoot power up here relocating that outlet right there then we're going to continue this power to put a scun right there cuz who doesn't like scones is it Wisconsin scones there's going to be a light there that light is going to have a switch here so I'm drawing out my pattern here I'm going to use my oscillating tool create my channel to have the least amount of headaches of tinkering with drywall and the fun thing about it that'll be all shiplap so I don't have to do like fine fishing touches with drywall I'm always in the situations where I cut this thing out and I can't get my hammer in there this is [Music] dumb feeding cable man it's like pulling teeth ah victory [Music] so here's going to be the science I'm going to disconnect this Outlet tether all these together so now we'll have power going up this will be a blank junctioning box power is going to come out here Outlet jumping from there put an outlet here to regulate that scon [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] no more [Music] Outlet all right let's see if I remember how to hook up a switch so you have the hot cable on top hot cable on the bottom of the switch the single pole switch then we're going to connect to the common together when I was learning to do this I accidentally kept frying all my outlets and Breakers and then I finally learned how to do it the right way thanks YouTube and then we do a piggyback with the ground and that's how you wire up a switch vertical shiplap as per us I'm going to put some adhesive on the back so that I'm going to put a minimal amount of Nails in there cuz it's going to go just on the on the tongue part but the adhesive is going to do the work of clamping the sucker together couple of Brads just on the tongue [Music] all right that's the last of the trim and the shiplap the next thing we need to solve is getting some guardrail so here's what I'm thinking for the guard rail I'm going to do these vertical little slats uh it's going to be about 16 in tall about yay big but to give it more of a three-dimensional look these are going to be flat and the middle we'll call them Styles I don't know terminology and railings are going to go this way well no actually they're going to go this way that will give us the dimension because I'm going to secure this with glue uh and screws I don't want the screw to snap this it's pop it's it's a little more uh dense so pre-drill a pile of hold put a screw in with with glue should be really strong a shoot it broke maybe I could still save it by putting this on the that' be the bottom piece and that'll be the top damn all right I think to minimize the any kind of more breakage I think I'm just going to Brad nail it in place and then secure with screws afterwards cuz I don't want to keep breaking this wood again look at that perfect fit definitely didn't make any mistakes before it's a lie I was an eighth over but we got that fixed secure through the holes on the sides bottom here I don't know if I'm being biased but this thing is a thing of beauty I do have a surprise for Harper we're going to make it magical I got a couple of 2 by tws here and then we're going to stable Quin bbard this is where the fun part starts well it's actually the annoying part for me I'm going to start drawing out a bunch of random shaped stars all over the place here maybe even a crescent moon and then behind it I'm going to have a bunch of LEDs so this will be like a a night Starry Sky for the kiddos all right well here goes nothing they don't look like stars they kind of look like a little Dand lines but there's a little discovery that I learned when I flip it over we actually have a better rendition of a star I'm going to disconnect the nails from this flip it over and then maybe use a sharp utility knife and try to clean them up as much as I can they don't have to be perfect cuz Stars aren't perfect when you look at them anyways but this will actually resemble the star the best ladies and gentlemen check this out this came out way better than I thought it would and the little trick was i' used a little knife to clean them up but what really helped is like when you see a little bit of hair sticking out like that I Ed my little torch lighter and lightly burn them off so you can see a little bit of tarring there and that made him crisp so now that this is done and the LED lights are in what we need to do now is start cocking sanding priming painting Prime and paint this therefore I can then install that after all right we're ready to Prime got my hlp sprayer diluted the the primer a little bit you want to Prime because when it's around wood like that uh it will start absorbing the paint like a sponge and not only will you waste a lot of paint but it won't be the strongest bond so that's fine so for the paint we're doing redened Earth from Sheron Williams the missiles picked it up and the trim will be uh hushed Auburn it's going to be a lot of masking off cuz the railing is going to be completely different color I'm positive it's look great so got to been mixed up using a fine finishing sprayer so that we have a little bit more control but nice thing is the base so even if we cover the trim perfectly fine doing the railing with this cute little touch-up kit probably the cutest little roller i' ever worked with we're going to do one more coat and then we're going to start working on the upholstery so we got a nice little backboard we got nice little carpeted area and then we'll install the story lights [Music] this looks so incredible I wish I wish I had something like this I was a kid what I got next is I got half inch roundover that's going to sit and hug it like that therefore this whole entire section is going to rest on top so we're doing vertical tuft headboard uh the Miss has found some instructions for me we got our material here we're going to put our batting down so this keep keeps the material I think from moving and getting all knotted up or something put our foam cushioning there lay that there and then we're going to staple everything to the [Music] back once it's all stapled together individ pieces then we'll screw it into one giant piece of plywood and install the sucker in place now the difficult part is getting this extremely fitted piece of headboard into that Nook good luck to me I think my best option here is to cut it down the middle and install it in two sections now how am I going to Joint them together I don't know I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there [Music] and a nice easy installation just like that anybody can do it I will say how tight the installation is here I'm not concerned about securing it at all to the back because if it was that hard getting it in there there's no way it's coming out now I got to do the next one do a cushion down below here same wrap style except not toughed throw some curtains on do the finishing touches with the lights and everything I'll show you guys this big reveal [Music] oh [Music] all right let's talk…
