How to Build a Backyard Water Feature

What happens here

Begin by selecting the desired location for your water feature in your backyard. Place the 55-gallon storage container (which will serve as the hidden water reservoir) on the ground in the chosen spot. Use white spray paint to trace the outline of the container onto the ground. Then, carefully dig a hole following the traced outline. The hole should be deep enough to fully submerge the container, plus extra depth for the concrete forms that will support the wooden frame. Use a level to ensure the bottom of the dug hole is flat and level, as this will be crucial for the stability and proper function of the water feature. The video shows measuring the depth to ensure enough room for the container and concrete forms.

Goal: Create a level, excavated area for the water reservoir and frame supports.

Tools and materials

  • 55-gallon Storage Container — Acting as the hidden water reservoir
  • Level — Ensuring the bottom of the trench is flat and level
  • Shovel — Excavating the trench
  • Tape Measure — Measuring depth of the hole
  • White Spray Paint — Marking the outline of the reservoir for digging
