How to Build a Backyard Water Feature

What happens here

After digging the trench, cut two cardboard concrete forms (sonotubes) to the appropriate length. These forms will be inserted vertically into the ground on either side of where the reservoir will sit, providing a stable foundation for the wooden frame posts. Cut three pieces of 2x4 lumber: two vertical posts, each 5 feet long, and one horizontal cross-member, 4 feet long. Assemble these pieces into a U-shaped frame using exterior-grade screws to create the basic structure of the water feature. The 5-foot height accounts for 1 foot being buried in concrete, leaving 4 feet above ground. Place the assembled wooden frame into the dug holes, centering the posts within the concrete forms. Mix the fast-setting Quikrete in a mixing tub or wheelbarrow according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pour the mixed concrete into the forms, ensuring the wooden posts are completely encased. Use a level to ensure the entire frame is perfectly vertical and level in all directions. Use scrap pieces of wood to temporarily brace and secure the frame in place while the concrete dries, preventing any movement or leaning.

Goal: Erect a stable, level wooden frame with concrete footings.

Tools and materials

  • 2x4 Lumber — Constructing the main wooden frame (two 5-foot posts, one 4-foot cross-member)
  • Cardboard Concrete Forms — Creating round concrete footings for the frame posts
  • Circular Saw DeWalt — Cutting the 2x4 lumber to size
  • Cordless Drill DeWalt — Driving screws for frame assembly and various other tasks
  • Exterior-grade Screws — Assembling the wooden frame
  • Level — Ensuring the frame is plumb and level
  • Mixing Tub or Wheelbarrow — Mixing concrete
  • Quikrete — Creating the concrete footings
  • Trowel or Hoe — Mixing and working with concrete
  • Wood Scraps — Temporary bracing for the frame while concrete dries
