FAST Wall Patch! EASY Wall Repairs.

What happens here

Begin by assessing the hole in the drywall. The California patch method is suitable for smaller holes, typically the size of two fists or less, such as those caused by door handles or removed electrical outlets. Before starting, gather a scrap piece of 3/8 inch drywall. Identify the boundaries of the existing hole and feel around for any studs in the wall to avoid them if possible, as the California patch does not use backing wood.

Goal: Understand the suitability of the California patch and prepare initial materials.

hole right now so there are two different kinds of patches that we're typically going to be running into when we're doing drywall repairs a conventional patch is going to be um any patch where you would just cut out a hole in the wall and you would actually put pieces of wood back there attach it with some screws and then put your new piece in then you got to tape it skim coat it and texture it depending on the texture of the wall a California patch is great for any holes that are we kind of use a rule of thumb of about the size of two fists together or smaller it's going to be really good if you're doing uh outlet covers repairing where an outlet was if there's an area like this one where a handle went into a door or holes that are around that size so we always carry a couple scrap pieces of drywall with this this is just 3/8 drywall one of the first things we're going to do Matt is we're going to look for where the edges of the hole is uh so this one you can see the handle kind of makes an imprint coming up this way and we've got the hole here we're also also going to kind of feel around for like where there might be a stud in this wall so it sounds like we've got a stud probably running right about in here and then this is all open so if we know we need to do that we take our scrap piece of drywall and we're going to you got your knife on you so you can hold that scrap piece up
