Jobsite Sequencing: INTERIORS - What to Paint First?

[Music] this Krissy Idaho hater I'm journeyman Jon this is pay live TV and today we've got a cool subject this is what to paint first and we've got whole series of these videos coming out because there's a whole bunch of different scenarios that we run into every day and we just keep changing our mind on what we want to pay for you shouldn't ever figure it out now we don't really know what we're doing we're just just making it up as we go on the fly but really we actually do so this scenario we're gonna be talking about today this is gonna be a residential repaint and this is a scenario where somebody lives in the home so the home is completely occupied with furniture and all kinds of personal belongings and expensive stuff not expensive stuff and we're gonna be painting trim today and then we're gonna be painting the walls one color and then the ceiling is another color so how are we going to talk to that project I know one thing is we always spray our trim and we always spray our trim because we feel like you can get the best result sprained it and you can paint it faster right indeed so one of the things looking at the project if I know that's the first question are we spraying anything well I know we're doing trim so that's a given we are spraying so that's going to mean we're going to want to do any of our spraying first now what a lot of people fall into is once they get comfortable spraying and using an airless sprayer is they just go willy-nilly with a spray gun and start spraying everything because you know how to so why not so but before you get too crazy let's hold our horses here for us we're going to spray the trim and then depending on how much masking we have to do to spray the trim we may spray the ceilings but not the walls we typically always roll the walls we feel like you can get a lot better finish rolling the walls but with that in mind these walls right here this is an orange peel texture and some of this house is a knockdown texture so it's a heavy textured wall it's not a level-five finish so if you're dealing with a level-five finish that would be in a whole nother scenario because you may be spraying your walls and not rolling them but we're dealing with textures walls and on textured walls the rolled on finished always looks a lot better and then we do roll our ceilings but we'll spray them occasionally yeah so one of the reasons where we'll try to decide are we spraying the students or are we rolling them is going to be how much trim is there and how much masking do we have to do for the trim to get things completely covered so if it's just a little bit of trim here and there we're not really going to worry like small pieces of base I don't have to have complete coverage but if I've got a lot of window casings doors that I'm spraying in the rooms things like that and we've got to cover and seal everything then at that point I'll look at it and say okay first thing we're going to do is spray all of the ceilings so the dust falls down we'll clean off the trim and then we'll spray the trim yeah so we walk in the house the scenario looks like this you walk in the house before we enter the house when we begin setting down drop cloths set down and drop cloths start bringing in our materials because we don't want to walk on their floors so we start setting out and then guys will just start covering things up with plastic and getting things ready to spray begin the masking process and other guys will because if we're gonna be painting the whole house we're talking in the snow some guys will be taking down switch plates and stuff like that and so we just kind of delegate you know or we don't have to delegate with our team was everybody kind of understands their responsibilities so it's kind of just like a process everything just flows we just walk in and people just begin tackling tasks so spraying the ceilings do you get a better finish spray down or do you get a better finish rolling on spring ceilings is a little tricky and that's one of the reasons to why sometimes we'll opt to roll the ceilings instead is because rolling ceilings is a way that I can get the rest of the crew involved on a level where maybe they won't be able to spray now it's a bit faster to spray but you have to have a guy that can spray the ceilings available to do that and so that's one of those things you're looking at is what kind of I guess human resources do you have available to you when you're trying to look at a job and decide what should I do the other nice part about just rolling the ceilings is it's a lot less dust so what we would typically do is we would spray out that trim and then we would roll the ceilings and then the last thing we would do is walls yeah because when you spray the ceilings it's probably about twice as much dust that created spraying ceilings versus spraying the trim but when you're spraying the trim everything's typically wrapped up covering up everything is covered in everything so we're spraying the trim because a lot of there's a lot of debate about whether it's faster to spray the trim versus all that masking say if we're walking into a house it's 2,000 square feet is it gonna take us two or three days to mask that house and get ready to spray the trim no usually about 2,000 square feet what we're gonna be able to do and this is all about having good systems and processes in place but we're gonna go through and and have that whole thing masked and prepared that first day and ideally if we're feeling pretty good and we're we're moving at a good clip we're gonna try to get that trim sprayed on that first day as well if there's a lot of prep work that has to happen occasionally we'll push that into a second day but when you think about you know it's it's only going to take us probably an hour to spray two coats total on all of that trim and to have that kind of a flawless finish that is a lot faster than if we were sitting there trying to brush all of that stuff and do it by hand yeah especially since we can get guys involved even if they aren't as far along in their painting career yeah so we do have other
