What happens here

This project outlines the comprehensive process of demolishing an old backyard swimming pool and converting the area into a new lawn. It involves breaking up concrete structures, removing pool liners, backfilling the excavation with various types of dirt, compacting the soil, installing edging, and finally laying sod. The video highlights the use of heavy machinery like skid-steers, mini-excavators, and dump trucks, emphasizing efficient material handling and proper compaction techniques for a stable and aesthetically pleasing result.

soil and the director trailing behind by the window the soil and is where we go Six Feet Under [Music] I'm sticking up to [Music] down my spine the smell of it just is say good morning you guys we got a tight one today normally we want to pull them but we have two guys one is running the machine and the other one is doing what Tim is doing with the machine and that's just moving garbage so what he's trying to do is make space because he wants to start pulling concrete out and loaded up the truck [Music] the Tim's going to fold up this pool liner using the ASV simply because it reeks a lot of times these pool liners have stagnant water that's been sitting in them for a long time and they just smell bad now I know some of you are saying why didn't he just get out and grab that move it it would have been faster well have you ever tried to Ravel it looks like fluffy but that's a handful too by the time he got out holding it up a split around he would have never been able to do what he just did with the ASB right now I just want to take the concrete I got call the dirt broker he's gonna have I got a small truck coming down make sure he's got clearance on that overhang on about them try axles though I can probably count on one hand all the times we were able to actually back a truck this close up to a swimming pool and dump inside of it normally we're working off from the street and carting everything in so this job is going to go a little bit faster than what Tim would normally expect so we're gonna just see how this one goes [Music] so we saw everything and what you see I'm doing right there is using the Pickers on that beak to peel off the aluminum edging and while he's sorting and separating everything the trucks will continue to roll in so he's got to stay ahead of the trucks and also getting this much material removed as fast as possible so we actually started this project with our Bobo skid loader but it's really not set up to crawl down into the pool bottom very safely because it's gotten those non-air solid rubber tires although they have a very aggressive lug pattern because there's no air in them there's no give to them and you need that little bit of give that an aired tire will have in a situation like this to contour around and really bite into that dirt so what Tim was finding out is the ball ball skid loader has got insane amounts of power but that power doesn't translate to better traction so he got himself down into the pool bottom and almost didn't give himself up we had to pull this one off from a different site because he jumped in it and crawled right down into the pool bottom and didn't think twice about it with those tracks [Music] he followed along on our other pool demos you know that what he's doing there is called compression compaction you're not supposed to over compact these swimming pools or under compact him you've got to get him right in that's one sweet spot once he gets that soil compression compact he wants to start clearing space so that's our red truck in the background that double hauls meaning that he's gonna load it up with concrete then it's gonna go drop that off pick up dirt and come back we don't like to have a truck running empty any time that we can possibly avoid it so we always put a load on one way or expect him to have a load coming the other way when we're doing a swimming-pool demo like this about it I've had so many trucks with that old school gate latch works every time no PTO to go out like you've done [Music] nothing wrong with that now make sure that this guy doesn't go hey don't go too far forward you got power lines in front of you box is clean go down common mistake another common mistake truck drivers make is driving down the road with their PPO engaged boxes down the PTO stays engaged and then if they bump the PTO lever it'll start to go up that looks like good material Tim oh holy crap you're gonna have this done then you're gonna get overwhelmed yeah so I got to get some fool busted out and so I might have to take some stuff out on the road Collins have you ever thought about just getting a dumpster leaving a dumpster out here and just filling up a dumpster yeah so on a dumpster even a 40-yard dumpster you can only put ten tons in and so really you're wasting space because with concrete like for the debris log that doesn't take up that much space so yeah only reason I mentioned it is people in the comments before mentioned about using a dumpster and I thought ah that's great and I remember all the houses we do dump we do I know this is one of the first houses I ever demo 40 yard dumpsters concrete and everything and the guy the driver shows up from all like yeah you know here we go and he goes to lift the bidding and the nose of his truck just keeps coming off the ground yeah any of the say anything he just looked at me like yeah just common lessons you learn but yeah you get the smaller what do they got ten year twenty our ten twenty thirty and forty you can load the ten yarders up yeah [Music] so would have noticed over the years is that the guys that are doing the laboring in the field get a little too comfortable around a good equipment operator and soon that they have way more control over that piece of equipment than what they really might have and you're gonna actually see what that looks like here in just a moment [Music] they say up with the bucket in the air like that Tim can't necessarily see you is that buckets it that's his blind spot so just to be aware there's so many can see yeah you might not be able to [Music] one of the good things about that beak is he uses it not just to search through to look for buried debris but then also to clean up the debris that we're gonna haul out you watch him pull this piece out he shakes it down folds it up tightly and then gets it ready to go on a truck Tim's using compression compaction right now yeah the ASV is designed to blow up but with the way to them in the bucket but then what that's allowing him to do is he can actually see the ground applause packing right now we know what super compaction this isn't our first rodeo we use laboratory compaction on jobs customers just forget anything to take but if we were gonna put a patio on this gonna put foundation of a building we would do this differently all of this material would be over excavated and then we would treat this like a soil direction would over excavate the areas that we would need to fortify so that we could get oh the least one-to-one material over the side so what I'm saying is if we've got an area underneath the size of my hand that we've got to put a structure on we've got to go figure and build up in a pyramid style so that we can then keep the face strong you just can't go straight down I don't know if I'm saying that right [Music] so it's easy to remove all the stuff that you can see but right now what he's doing is looking for stuff that he can't see buried pipes buried footings anything that may be down below that grade we want to just get all of that up just in case they ever want to do an addition or an expansion on the back of that property if the another excavator came in and started to find buried debris their job site could be shut down but we need to get all that out so that that if never comes to be [Music] my job but some of you are probably thinking why would he take the time pick that up just to set it down about five feet away from where he picked it up well the idea is from us to break it free from the rebar and stack up his winning pieces like flapjacks as possible that way there Lewis and when the truck shows up you can slide in underneath it and take a whole pile all at once it does take a little bit of time to remove these pieces and separate them and when the truck sit there while time is money I always love the way our kids go on just a movement I didn't expect you to drop like that then a rebar is tying all those pieces of concrete together she's not struggling with the weight of the concrete as much as the rebar that ties it all together the crazy thing that was the ball but it just peels it all that right now really yeah so the Volvo has got more lifting power but we just couldn't get it down into the pool bottle so once we get the majority of the demolition out and the concrete removed then we can start to cut straight on just dirt at work and we have two zones one we call the structural zone and then the other is the organic zone the structural zone is from the bottom of the swimming pool up to within about the top 12 inches and what we do with that soil is all pretty consistent place it compact it try to get the best material to the right moisture content that's a critical element but once we get within the top 12 inches we look for organic material to start to incorporate into that top layer now we do include one load of pulverize screen black dirt on every single one of our projects but sometimes it takes more than that the thing is is we can't tell exactly how much dirt we're going to need until we get all of the grades set our number one goal when we're done with a swimming pool is to make sure that we get all of the water to flow down and away from the remaining structures sometimes I can be confined like you see it here in a small space but other times we have to go to three times the size of the swimming pool to catch the grade outside further into the yard that's when we'll bring in extra black dirt on request or actually on them as a needed basis see what Sam and Todd are doing down there they're agate hounds it's actually kind of cool no seriously these guys love agate okay let's walk look over and see what pretty rock Sam found Sam what pretty rock did you find come on I know you got a rock in your hand that's a $50 rock with with how the banding is in it there's not any carts or whatever and then you then it spilling through the back so you can see the layers yeah Todd made some surprisingly good money in a bait and a house demo we did the basement was full of rocks you were picking rocks out of the bottom of the basement let's back this up we'll finish this story let's get him fueled up you found one that was worth $4,000 what not script I saw them all for about 3500 but I thought you had some too I thought you had a couple monster ones like they were worth like know they'd makes me so mad just out of the out of a basement and I was I was ready to just knock it over you know yeah laughs it'd be either I call them and I asked him I was like hey get these rocks for the base or he's like yeah and then started it yeah that's kind of fun having a rock on the lingo except I hate every time you guys pick up a rock like that's a $50 bill and I'm like I would have skipped that across the pond I don't even know what to look for leave a jobsite nothing everybody [Laughter] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so even though it's just a yard we're still gonna set up a laser you can see it in the lower left-hand corner there to make sure that the pitch and the entire project goes exactly the way we want we don't want any little spots that pool or puddle now part of this backyard renovation is we also have to install edging and size so right here at this spot there's a couple things going on we want the top of the side to match perfectly with that concrete but we also want to make sure we get enough organic material beneath that side to get it to grow so we're gonna take a little bit of extra time right along this edge to make sure that we get all of those factors lined up just perfectly before we move on to the next step one of the things we don't own but we really do need is a Harley rake and what that is is that's a bar on the front of your machine and as you're backing up it'll grade everything out for you now we do it the old-fashioned way with the bucket of the skid loader and then hand raking everything out to make sure that we get all of the ruts out but we spend a lot of extra time where we really wouldn't have to if we had a Harley rake so I think our one of our very next purchases will be that tool just to speed up this part of the process all right guys today is the exception to the rule we've usually don't have an to drive our truck right into the pool but in this case we got it right there it's kind of nice when you've got nice clothes accent nice when you have convenient I feel like Kevin from the office sometimes so I've had a lot of the same guys work with me for a really long time John the truck driver here has been with me 10 15 years tim is going on 20 plus years Blaine has been with me for a long time and one of the things that I've noticed works the best is when you take and do little extra things for your guys now one of the things you're gonna see in a minute is every few years I buy them all boots and this year I bought them Philadelphia's by Keynes and I want to see what they think of them so we're gonna find out how they're doing with their boots right now because sometimes it doesn't go the way I want it to you actually still like re do you actually like coming on yeah better than the other ones okay yeah I've never actually given you about giving you three four pair of boots now and you've never actually liked any of them that's cuz they were pinching these ones are actually comfortable these ones these ones are actually they fit there the inside isn't run apart where nose cone is yeah it isn't coming apart tim is the same way I've given him so many pair of boots and he's like oh this didn't fit right I'm just like I'm done I'm done getting you guys boots I'm just telling John how picky you are about your boots I did okay so I I got odd feet man so it's hard to find boots the nine and a half it but sometimes nine and a half's are too tight like so these are tens I figured they'd be way too big but they're working off you know there's plenty of room I like them alright don't hurt my back doesn't hurt must be okay dude I've been wearing these things non-stop and I freaking love them so the next part of this project is installing the edging around the perimeter before we lay the sod down now the edging that we use is not come in those roles that you see at Menards or Home Depot and the reason we don't use the rolls is because those kink really easily and then you see this nice perfect straight piece of edging or a nice flowing curve and it's got this weird little dent in it we use the straight stick edging and that is just it's easier to work with and it gives you a better result after the fact so we always install the straight stick stuff just to keep out any problems and to give a better finished look when the job's all done or whatever the ASB versus our Volvo well okay yep so the Volvo I had rebar lace to concrete and I I just picked up a piece over here and it was moving it right yeah it was moving it all the way over here and these were big sheets right yeah I had no problem like just and then I was over there and there was probably a 13 foot by 10 foot piece of concrete and I had the beak on it and I'm trying not to hit the fence and I just I grabbed it and I turned and it just pulls it right off and it lifted it was like no problem I told Sam I'm like I'm really liking the power so it sounds like we need to get rid of that Volvo with those tires and put get one with treads on it that's so that would be the ultimate machine it's not so bad it's got so much power we can do some good demo with it yeah then I went to drive it into the pool built my ramp and I'm I'm working it packing the ramp so I don't get stuck and all Sun poked through okay so put the bucket down start pushing myself back and pretty soon I'm pushing air I'm like okay it's good this is the shitty Friday well those trailers those solid tires suck offroad I just went straight down like yeah you know I'm even scare me I know I knew I was coming back out I just just was not a problem I went well when I brought it up north I'll it would literally we I was working on top of the water table with inches of just there was nothing like it where there was the pond there was the dirt it just floated no issue and then it poured rain while I was working and I didn't even know it my uncle's like you know it poured a half into rain in like five minutes I'm like I noticed I couldn't see as well Friday and Saturday dude air conditioner in that thing no there was no heat I was cold I'm like how do I I need a little router lifting boards off the driveway I was like we do like two or three of them okay but a few bad heat stroke a few times you get way more sensitive to it well all right you guys first stuff I want to say thanks for sticking around I know these are long ones and you guys said that you'd like more jobsite videos so that's what I did with this one and I need to hear from you you know I'm gonna try to do these four start to finish so this is what you want just say more job say videos and I will keep them coming I promise we don't do a ton of different work we do what we call our bread-and-butter work better these are smaller lucrative jobs that we can get in get out and be on down the road instead of going on to these highly complicated projects so stuff like this is something that we like to do and you'll see that we can leave the jobsite and let the guys go in and wrap things up and that lets Tim and I both go on to the next project and start setting things up and stay ahead of the crews so now you guys do me a favor and check out the other two videos that I'm going to put up on the board up here and hit that subscribe button and also hit the bell notification button because that's how you know when I upload a new video and as always you guys god bless go get them and I hope you enjoyed today's project
