COOKING WITH CAST IRON!! EVERYTHING YA EVER WANTED TO KNOW...SEASONING/CARING FOR CAST IRON COOKWARE
What happens here
After the self-clean cycle, carefully remove the hot pans from the oven (using oven mitts). The old seasoning and rust will have turned into a powdery residue. Take the pans to the sink. For heavy rust, use a drill with a wire brush attachment to grind off loose rust. For lighter residue, use SOS pads (steel wool pads with soap), plain steel wool with soap, or a coarse Scotch-Brite scrubbing sponge. Scrub thoroughly under running warm water until all surfaces are clean and feel 'porous' to the touch. Pay extra attention to all edges, handles, and grooves.
Goal: Remove all burnt residue and rust to achieve bare, porous cast iron.
