Mark and Cut Rafters
At 7:13 in
Building a SHED ROOF over a DECK - Part 2!!
What happens here
Using a speed square, mark the 'ridge cut' (the top angle where the rafter meets the main beam) on a rafter according to the calculated pitch (e.g., slightly over 6 degrees). Then, measure down from the ridge cut along the rafter to mark the 'birdsmouth cut'. This cut consists of a 'seat cut' (the horizontal portion that rests on the beam) and a 'plumb cut' (the vertical portion). For this project, a height above plate of 8 inches was chosen, and an additional 2 inches was 'burned' (added) to the measurement for safety, resulting in a 7.25-inch depth for the birdsmouth. This ensures sufficient bearing surface on the beam while allowing for a slight overhang. Carefully cut along these marks using a circular saw, creating a template rafter.
Goal: Use the calculated pitch and measurements to mark the ridge cut and birdsmouth cut on a template rafter, then cut it precisely using a circular saw.
