What happens here

This video provides a detailed guide on constructing a new interior wall, installing soundproofing insulation, hanging and finishing drywall, and finally painting and adding trim. The project includes preparing the floor, framing the wall with a large door opening, installing mineral wool insulation for sound and fire resistance, covering the frame with drywall, applying multiple coats of joint compound, texturing the wall, priming, painting, and installing baseboards for a complete finish.

oh gotta get messy a little bit i'm not a drywall guy but this is some diy stuff guys [Music] but first let's talk about sponsors today's video area you guys know i've been a huge fan of way before their sponsor of this channel i've worn this stuff for years and now i have the privilege of wearing their work wear for all these home improvement projects big fan hot summer days are out so we're in the garage we're in the house we're outside i'm wearing their ariat m4 durastretch canvas shorts they're awesome they are triple needle stitch for the added support they have utility pockets pen slot carabiner loop they have one percent spandex in there they're extremely comfortable and they don't look like dad shorts that's the most important part to me the hall of famers guys look at these boots i've put them through the ringer i can't tell you how many projects i've had and done with these rebar six inch wedge boots they are a composite tote slip resistant they are comfortable they are waterproof i've been on roofs i've been in snow i've done plumbing i've done flooring i can't tell you how many things i've done with them and they've been faithful to the very end love their product go find yourself check out the link in the description all the products that i've favored and i really have and wear every single day including their heritage edition shirts use my link in the description get 10 off your first order today now without wasting any more time let's get back into this video let's go all right so we'll come back for another episode now we're in a different room we're out of the kitchen here's the long promised wall that a lot of people are against because typically i mean who takes down everybody takes down wall but nobody puts up walls we're gonna do that here so we're gonna put a wall all the way up these are 14 tall ceilings we're gonna have a seven foot opening with an eight foot tall door nice and big two big sliding barn doors so that will actually allow for us to have its own designated media room or rec room all that stuff we're going to insulate everything it's just going to be a perfect bonus room so the first thing we're going to do is start cutting our flooring out notching our drywall and start doing our framing let's get to work [Music] i need to find out which way these trusses are going bingo they're going in the direction we want you're saying that we don't have to notch out drywall when it's non-load-bearing but i found for non-load-bearing walls so as long as you build a solid frame and connect it well once it's installed it won't crush the drywall and i don't think we need to you know be quicker if i just use a circular saw i was wondering yeah i'm gonna use a circular saw what am i doing i'm gonna do the corners though you guys remember i mentioned that we have radiant flooring so water lines that are heated running through the concrete i'm using a thermal imaging scanner i'm not seeing any fluctuation of color here in terms of heat so i think we should be good to go we're going to start doing the top plates first 2 by 4 by 16 feet we're gonna secure it in place and then we're gonna double up for another layer that's typically the order of operation usually it's for dispersant of weight and then we'll start making it uprights and our bottom plate okay so we're gonna secure this bottom plate to the concrete if you're working on subfloor you just drag or drop a bunch of nails in or screws now pressure treated in case moisture something happens with it we're going to use these concrete anchors and these are inch and a quarter by tapcon they're four inches deep drive it all the way through 16 on center like studs and then put them in place and the second will be ready for the uprights [Music] i'm making the header for the header we're gonna sandwich two two by twelves plenty of load to carry here they are now here's a kicker dimensional lumber this is we call it a two by twelve but it's really one and a half when you stack one and a half and one and a half together it makes what three doing simple math today the problem is these studs are three and a half so we're missing an extra half an inch the way to counter that is when you typically build a header you put something between it it's just a spacing thing not a structural thing so you can use little scrap pieces of half-inch wood that you have or you can take a piece of osb plywood or whatever you got put it over screw it all together sandwich it you got a nice strong actually we've got to say bada-bing bada-boom we got a nice strong header all right so you guys heard me throwing out all this terminology let's talk a little bit of you know framing terminology okay so these are studs everybody knows that that is their base plate that is the top plate on top now uh they the the outermost of whatever door opening will be called the king stud okay after that is the jack stud why because it's holding the header on top of it which leads me to the next one the portion over it that disperses the pressure from the top you know in school they teach you an earthquake go underneath the cover well it's a header right there that's the header um now the last part is the studs that go up here vertically they're called studs and um why they're called i don't know but it's all part of dispersing that energy so what we're doing is we're adding blocking to this with the 14 foot span here unless we had some blocking in there we don't want that wiggle so we're just pinching these in here make them nice and tight [Music] all right obviously we have it overhanging here's a quick and easy way i clean not to mention how to cut drywall come on all right take two now here we go let's do this nice quick sear and on this side you're gonna cut the film that's on this side real quick and there you go a nice perfect cut [Music] so one of the things tyler caught us here is uh making sure that we have a seam that doesn't line up in the middle of this doorway or at the beginning of the door why because when the doors are open and closed that creates a flexing point and drywall could break so uh what he's recommending is extending the sheet across it which makes total sense making sure that we don't have a funky doorway cracking all the time just a reminder for a couple of tools you really don't need a lot in fact i'm using this as a drywall screw gun what it does is you press the button and then it doesn't drive it until you press it into the wall and it has a stop gauge so you don't over drive them it's just a speed thing you could totally do some of the regular drill but you have to use the special drywall screws uh this is a thermofiber fire and sound guard um what's cool about it is it's a fire resistant up to 2000 degrees that's nice but we don't need it for that excellent sound performance that's exactly what we need it for and it's 70 recycled content so you know why not be you know a little green the cool thing about this also is it's mineral wool so we don't have to deal with any kind of fiberglass junk now that the drywall is up over there we have to make sure we cover this window which i don't know why back in the day they would have these fake windows but nonetheless we're gonna make this own room so to save you all the hassles because the same stuff let's do demo and just like that covered her up okay so the inside of this doorway is one thing we need to address right now because in our situation we're going to have sliding barn doors this is going to get finished off with the same bullnose rounded edges that the rest of the house has in order for us to install these bullnose edges we need to first put a piece of drywall in here leave this gap here and allow us for us to attach [Music] all right so let's talk about these seams and how we're going to handle them um so we're using a joint compound it's usually about 20 bucks or so like that i got a little trowel here this is a jointing knife it's it all depends on the width of them so it's a multi-step process i'll show you so here's how i approach this grab a bit throw it in here come at the side here and we're gonna spread it all out now that we got our first layer on we're gonna use our joint tape right in the middle and then we're gonna use the same taping knife and squeeze all the joint compound out and pressing the tape in at the same time covering all these the same exact tape you're using has a little not perforated but a little crease down the middle it makes it perfectly easy for you to create a corner once you bend it in place slap some joint compound on the side push it in and then use the same tape knife to squeeze it all out [Music] now i'm not saying i'm scared of heights i just don't like them and i don't uh a lot of it has to do with knowing too many people who've fallen off the ladder so i don't enjoy being up here 14 feet up in the air i'm a ground level guy i'm a level guy i'm a down-to-earth kind of guy i guess that's what i'm going with we did the taping now we have to float it and you floated with typically the next size up of uh drywall trowel so you have uh the four inch that we did here now the next we're gonna go with like an eight inch and then we'll spread it making this hump less noticeable less aggressive but before we get there we have to um sand this down and you can get a sander out and have a bunch of dust here or here's a trick i learned it's called wet sanding so you just get a sponge or i think it's called sponge sanding i think that's what it is mind shaming you get a sponge you get it wet and then you just kind of wash it over and what it does is it dilutes the old mud enough to be less abrasive just like that and we're not taking any tape down so which is great we're going to finish this all off and then we'll start floating this thing all right so now we're going to start floating it this is the child i'm going to be using um this is hot mud which means that it could solidify within like 5 10 minutes give the consistency of like runny ketchup and then what we're going to do is basically create a wider fan than that to blend things in got to get messy a little bit i'm not a drywall guy but this is some diy stuff guys yes 10 minutes it's already getting hard like don't that's that's gross no that this is getting hard not learn my lesson don't use hot mud for doing this and long process it's kind of used for patching stuff you know you somebody put a hole through the wall you can do it all in one day now so i did go and buy regular old joint compound and i thinned it out on water mix it up so it's nice and uh you know shaky or gelatinous i guess keep in mind when these rounded over corner radiuses there's a divot in there and what that's made for is for you to needing to float this as well so here's what i'll show you um you'll throw some in here and then blend it in with the rest of the wall [Music] day one we got the tape day two we have the uh float day three we're gonna sand it and then we're gonna really kind of assess if we're gonna need to have a third float sometimes you can get away with just only those two steps as long as you don't have any crazy transitions so if you're gonna max out your vacuum hose you gotta improvise how to get more vacuum hose [Music] i've always wanted to get one of these this is called the hopper and what it is is basically just a paint spraying style gun that hooks up to an air compressor a really tiny one we have one outside from like harbor freight and uh you just put your mud in here thinned it out of course connect it and then when you spray your essentially this thing splatters it out creating an orange feel texture so hopefully we can get that on fast i got this for like 50 bucks on facebook marketplace [Music] first time ever using a hopper laying down like a dream minimum adjustments if you have an opportunity to do a big space get a hopper you'll love it [Music] it's floated perfectly it's textured great you never really know if you had too much or too little texture until it actually dries i feel comfortable with this now we're going to paint and primer primer's important because then it blocks the the the paint from getting absorbed too far into it we'll put a coat of primer we'll throw some paint on there and this puppy will be ready to go primer's down let us paint [Music] all right paint's dry we are going to go ahead and wrap this up and put some baseboards on [Music] hey
