What happens here

This project details the construction of a new concrete block retaining wall, including the demolition of an existing failed wall and the step-by-step process of preparing the base, laying courses, backfilling, and addressing drainage. It highlights a 'reverse build' technique due to site constraints and provides insights into common retaining wall failures due to improper base preparation.

all right guys we're going to do things a little bit different today i'm going to shut up and i'm going to let the actions of my crew speak for themselves a few of the things that you're going to see in today's video is tim is going to walk you through how we reverse build a retaining wall typically we start at the lowest point and work our way up so that we can do step ups on the block but in this case we had to do it fast afterwards and we had to step the wall down we don't recommend doing it this way and it's tricky and he's going to walk you through that then we're going to show you probably one of the oddest ways that we've ever seen a retaining wall fail ever and we're going to also show you some of the really bad techniques that other people have used when building retaining walls and we're going to let you just watch some of the details that we put into building one of our retaining walls and the rest of this video is going to be done by my guys we'll see you at the end come back a little bit that's fine give us a little room to work okay seven and a half and then you just want to kind of check looks like i could probably come up just a hair but we're close you don't want to go you want to go too much where you're uh going to be fighting it so much you can get them get it as close as you can here so that's a little far now oh it's gonna work this way back now okay so we're close there and you want to be about a half inch in front because you know it's gonna step back steps up right so get an idea there step up or seven and a half and give it a couple taps to see if she's gonna move or not this is some good base material man so that's solid in there i think that's turning in too much already or no but you see that little gap there and the bubble is just a hair that way you know what i'm saying so if you knock that down just a hair it should [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well we're starting the second half of this project here um just tearing into this double tier wall it's super uh wet down here so we'll see what we run into for the base might have to add a thickened base to uh compensate for the wet soils and got some goofy stuff going on here drain tile there the rock was super deep so maybe that was causing it the other half of the walls in the back are finished they're just been putting finished touches on it and throwing some cap on a little later once we like how the walls end off we stepped it down pretty symmetrically here two-tier wall now we're gonna do a similar thing on this side i was just showing alex here uh good reason why this wall was failing is well one it's on no aggregate that i can see we're at the base level now where we're pulling out the old wall you can see remnants of blocks in here the one thing i've been noticing is that as i'm digging some of these out they're staying together but this is remnants of the actual base block so uh when they just fall apart like this i haven't seen this too much but this is the actual block and it's just decomposed and rotten just gone so uh good indicator why the wall was uh falling over [Music] foreign all right so we traced the top of the wall over there to try to keep the same radius and then on this side over here we went to flip it and we didn't want to cut this board so we just took a piece of geo grid traced it out on top of it painted our line there and you can see our radius lines all the way up perfectly you can see our line there that we traced and then right over where we spray painted [Music] here [Music] so [Music] all right guys well i hope you enjoyed today's video and i did not forget about the drink of the day it is lime spin drip i'm telling you i'm in love with this spin drift stuff i gave one to my daughter and she was hooked grapefruit it's her favorite but lime is i kind of it's kind of a love hate type of a thing and you guys tell me what you thought of today's video i loved it i just it was so to me i got drawn in to the details i got drawn in watching i love noticing the quality that the guys are putting in to the project without me breathing down their neck or without tim looking over their shoulder it's just starting to become kind of like i don't know what is that uh what do they call that a corporate environment or something i don't know we're not a corp we're not a corporate corporation i don't know hope you guys understand what i'm trying to say and that's our video for today hope you enjoyed it i enjoyed watching it i enjoy making these videos for you but we got some cool stuff
