3 Ways to Build Floating Shelves
What happens here
First, cut the 2x6 Douglas fir lumber to the desired length (6 feet in this case) using a miter saw. Then, use a router with a rounding-over bit to soften and round the sharp edges of the cut lumber. After rounding, begin sanding the entire surface of the wood. Start with 80-grit sandpaper, followed by 120-grit, and finish with 220-grit. Each successive grit removes the swirl marks from the previous, coarser grit, resulting in a smooth finish.
Goal: Prepare the 2x6 lumber for finishing.
Tools and materials
- 120-grit Sandpaper — Medium sanding to refine the surface
- 220-grit Sandpaper — Fine sanding for a smooth finish
- 80-grit Sandpaper — Initial coarse sanding to remove imperfections
- Clamps — Securing the wood to the workbench during sanding
- Miter Saw Ryobi — Cutting the 2x6 lumber to length
- Random Orbital Sander Festool — Sanding the wood surfaces
- Rounding-over Bit — Used with the router to create rounded edges
- Router Ryobi — Rounding over the edges of the lumber
