What happens here
This guide provides verbose, step-by-step instructions on how to repair a leaking shower faucet diverter stem. The process involves shutting off the main water supply, disassembling the faucet handles and covers, removing the diverter stem and seat, rebuilding the diverter stem with new washers and O-rings from a repair kit, and then reinstalling all components to ensure proper water flow to either the tub spout or the showerhead without leakage.

(15,678 characters)Hey folks, that thinks a guy here, three-piece shower valve, not my friend. Price fister, they make a pretty decent three-piece shower valve, but it is not diverting water the way that it should. That means that middle handle is not allowing the water to fully go up to the shower head. We'll get that hooked up today. So come along. Let's get to fixing. Okay, so this is a three-handle price fister faucet, right? Hot, cold, this is your diverter. The diverter actually doesn't have a handle on it right now, we're trying to locate some of those. If you guys know where we can get those, let me know, because I've been looking everywhere. I don't have a clue. But this is the problem we have. When you turn on the water and you go ahead and you turn the diver on, well, the diverter works. You get shower over here, but water still comes out right here, all right? So we're needing to fix that. We are going to go ahead, we're going to pull this apart, and I'm actually going to show you how to rebuild that diverter. I got this little repair kit right here. You can see it's a price fister tub shower diverter stem repair kit. It comes with all the washers, the O-rings, the screw, and even comes with a new seat. So I'm going to show you how to take the seat out. I'm going to show you how to rebuild the whole stem, and hopefully we don't have to buy a new stem. Okay, and so then we'll come out here. We will find the meter box. We have located that, and it looks like a hamster or something is living here with all these wood chips. So see, we can do this one-handed, all right, just leave that right there for right now. Okay, so the first thing I want to do is actually plug up the drain, right? You don't want anything getting in there. So get that by-boy closed. We'll get this zoomed in a little bit. Now we'll just bleed the water off. Get all that drain, open that diverter up, open the drain back up so we can empty it. Get all that out of there, and then we'll close it again. So inside this, usually there's going to be a cap right here. Well you can see the cap is not on the center one, that's another thing we're trying to locate. You just take a Phillips head screwdriver and unscrew this, and then this whole thing once you get it unscrewed enough, it's going to just pull out, okay, so see that just pops off, that is just where the stem sits down, and you got that screw in there. The next thing is going to be this cover. There's actually two pieces to this cover, and we'll take this off and I'll show you. So a lot of times these are going to screw out together. This whole little spindle right here actually will unscrew, okay, so this piece right here actually screws into where the packing goes, and that's what holds this in place. You can see they put a little siliconized acrylic caulk here, and that's just to keep this in place so it doesn't move. Next, we're going to be grabbing a set of cowbells, okay. These are different size wrenches, essentially, that fit into a lot of faucet setups, so I'm fixing to show you this particular one, if you have these inset ones, these are essentially a bunch of deep weld sockets, right, and they're just really for doing this type of work. Okay, so the one we're going to be using is actually going to be this one. You might have to go through it and find your size and once you do, then you'll know and once you get used to them, you know what it is. You can always use more cowbell. So this little thing just clips off you here, and now that I've had to pull this out, I was just thinking this will make a really good tour of you soon, so be on the lookout for that. So it also comes with a little handle bar, right, so this is just going to help you to get some torque on this thing. So we'll just find the size that we need, which is actually going to be this one right here. You can see sometimes they fit just a little loose, it's not going to be too loose, but it's going to work for you, and we will just take this, you just slide this in that slot. You could also use a wrench if you wanted to, you could use an adjustable jaw, you could use pliers, you're going to marinate that up, but you could use an adjustable jaw for this as well, and it would work really nice. But you can just take this, get this right in here, and that's going to help spin that off really easy. Sometimes if the stem is really long, you can see that that right there, sometimes that's actually going to hinder it, so you have to take this out and you're going to want to use an adjustable jaw on this, all right, then you can just go ahead, spin this off and pop it out. Okay, we'll be able to clean this all up, make it look pretty, we'll put all new gear on it, and we'll get it rolling. You can see right there. That washer is aed up, and this other washer is actually, did it fall down, yeah, broken. So there's another washer that actually goes right here, that is missing a piece, we'll make sure that we find that and get that out of there, and is broken off. Okay, and so if you look down in here, that is the seat, the seat is down inside there, and remember, it came with a seat, so we're going to run and replace that too. And to replace the seat, you're going to want to grab a, I'll grab the old one out and I'll show you, I'll put a link for this, the cowbells, the repair kit, I'll put a link for everything in the description box below. If you guys liked the video, please subscribe to the channel, click that like button, we'd love to have you keep coming back, we're just trying to help people, and we really hope we're doing that, and so with this, this is what we're going to be taking out of there. Okay, we'll pop open that new kit right here, and we'll pull off the seat, right? So we've seen that inside there, you know what it looks like, and this is actually just going to, you're going to take this, and we're going to be inserting it, you want to find which one is going to actually fit in there best, right? You're going to be able to take that bigger square side, and you're going to put it right in there, and it is just going to match up, we'll get that right in here, it's kind of awkward, whenever you have the handles and everything else on, so you just need to find your position, where you're going to be able to get a good grip, and then you might have to put two hands on it, this one actually came out pretty easy with one. Once you do that, you get it loosened, I usually just take my finger and stick it up in there, spin it out the rest of the way, and sometimes you just can't get it out for a bit around, boom, maybe it works a little bit better sometimes, take your smallest finger, right? If your fingers are, you could usually, yeah, there you go, get a pinky up in there and pull it out, sometimes it stays on the range, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it can be tricky, I just want to let you know that, alright, so then, we've already kind of got this thing opened up here, and we'll just grab the seat first off, and I'm actually just going to do the same thing, right? I want to make sure that it goes in there, right where I want it to, my pinky kind of works pretty good for this, so I'm just going to put it right back where it is, get it set in there, you might have to start it counterclockwise, right? A lot of times when you're threading something in, you can go counterclockwise until you kind of almost feel a click and hear a click, and then you're able to start turning, that way you know it's not cross threaded, and then you're able to just get it in there, get a couple thread turns on it, and then we can go back to the range, get it nice and snug, doesn't have to be crazy, and you're good to go, let's just start pulling this apart, so we'll just unscrew this washer first, get this washer out of here with this screw, experiment comes with a new screw as well, and this is so old and brittle, well I thought maybe we didn't have to chop it out, but it actually came out pretty quick and easy, but yeah you can see that it's started to mushroom out a little bit, and then it actually is pretty beat up there, good little nick taken out of it, and then we can just unscrew this the whole way out, just get that apart, okay, so let's just go to adjustable jaws at this point, just to get this bad boy off of here, one might work, but two always having a backup is always a good idea, and that's just to get this stem out, yes, it's very loose, but we'll replace this packing since they gave it to us, we'll get it hooked up, the other thing with this is, is this little washer right here, like I said, sometimes that comes out and gets stuck, but this one right here, you pop that off, that's going to be replaced by one of these green ones right there, and let's just try to get this out real quick, take it outside, alright, so this can be a little bit messy, it's why we come outside, just flip this around, a little bit of set screwdriver here, I feel like I need a pick right now, I don't know that I have a pick set, okay, well I think that's one of my next Amazon orders is a pick set, but you do this enough, just be gentle around those threads, you don't want to mess up the threads that screw that piece of housing in there, but you can see, just start going around, this will come out, you can do this without jacking those threads up, right, and then boom, you get down to there, and now we've just got that whole thing popped out, cleaned out, and we're good to go, we'll go back inside and we'll put a new packing in after we pick all this up, plumbers faucet and valve grease, we're going to need a little bit of this to put the packing in play here, alright, so let's just take this, we've got this all cleaned out, just go ahead, we're going to pop that packing down in there, get that down as far as it'll go, you'll see that it's in there, it's not going anywhere, we'll just loosely put this on, couple turns, don't make it tight on the packing because that just kind of cinches it down and closes that hole, makes it smaller, we don't want that, you want to grab the stem, so this stem before you actually put this in here like so, you want to make sure that you put this washer on the stem and just have it sit down here, right, because this actually is going to sit right on the back of this, and that needs to be in play, you don't want to forget that, not going to be pretty, alright, so to get this through there, it's going to be pretty tight, so what we're going to do is we're actually just going to take a little bit of that grease and go to put some of that on there real quick, so it doesn't have to be tons, you know, just a little bit, you're just going to want some, that's for sure, because this is going to be a thing, it's hard to put this together sometimes, okay, grab this in this, and then we just give this a push, you see it's starting to pop through, but it's definitely doesn't want to go, there we go, so now we're through there, we're on there, before we screw this, before you screw this down to these threads, make sure that this piece right here is a little bit more tight, right, so at least see if you can get a turn on it, we don't want it to pop out before we put this piece in here, okay, and so now we're going to grab this, got to kind of hold that packing in place too, as we get this down in here, and so that's tight enough for right now, this is back in where it needs to be, to be able to close into open, and now what we got to do is, new washer, a new screw, and then the new ring, okay, so this new, crushing gasket, right, it's just going to go over this, right here, and then we'll take this washer, take this screw, screw that in there, oh, and you know what, they give you two, so it's good, it's good to have an extra one, because you only need one here, that's nice, I don't know if that was just them accidentally doing it, or they give you two, but flip this around real quick, get that put in place, and you're good to rock and roll, this is back, and we're ready to reinstall it, okay, and so before we put it in, I just noticed that there's a little bit of something around the edge of that, so let's just take a fitting brush, get that on there nice, and get that in there kind of tight, put this on here, and since we had this like this, now I'll be able to show you that you can see that that, this will go back a little bit further, you can actually have that stem out a little bit, well, with an adjustable jaw on this thing, you can hook it right up, that little green crush washer, it sits down pretty nice, right, so you want to make sure that's a little snug, and we're definitely going to look and make sure there's no leaks, but get that put on there, get it nice and tight, and then I'm also going to go ahead, and we're going to give this packing a couple more turns, you can see that it's kind of loose, there we go, almost a full turn, probably about three quarters of a turn, now we're going to go ahead, we're going to turn the water back on, and we're going to hook this up, you probably could do this without draining this tub, we'll see how that works right there, we'll leave that shut off, and we'll leave these open, and you'll get some water coming out of here, all right, so now let's try this, see what we get, look at that, well that is way better than it was, yeah, look at that, yeah, minimal, we have got minimal drip coming out of there, for a three piece handle valve, I think that is pretty good, right, because these things, yeah, it actually looks like it's completely stopping, which this worked out really well, awesome, now with this, we just take it, reinstall, you can just screw that back in, screw that back on, before you put this back in, just take the screw, put the screw inside of it, that way it's not going to fall off, it's just going to be right in there, you got that hooked up, you're able just to screw that right back on, good to go, now, if only we could find the handle for this one as well, this would be awesome, it would be complete and it's good, but we're back to functioning, and that's what we're looking for, and besides that if we had a handle, it would be so much easier, okay, so as it was cleaning up, I realized that there's two green washers sitting here, and there was only two green washers in the rebuild pack, so I had to tear everything down again real quick, and there was not a washer in here, it's funny because it was not leaking, but there was no washer, and we don't want to leave it like that, right, so we'll pop that back in there, and then I'll just put it back together real quick, so here's the thing, I actually don't have the water shut off right now, I just didn't turn both of these back on, and you could just pop this diverter out and change this real quick, just make sure this is on there, like I said, it wasn't leaking, but it very well could have at some point, and we don't want that, hope, make sure there's no drip, everything looks good, and shut that back down, all right folks, there we have it, you're looking for a product to hook this up, this is the rebuild kit for that diverter, it is a Lasco 0-2013, okay, this little bad boy helped us out, you can buy the stem itself complete and just swap it out real quick, we can do that, but you know what, this is $4 versus the 15, right, so that's what we ended up going with, I really hope you guys enjoyed the video, if you can please subscribe to the channel, click the like button, give us some comments, let us know what you think, we greatly appreciate it, thank you very much, and we'll see you again real soon.
