Before removing the old element, you must drain the water from the tank. Shut off the cold water supply valve to the heater. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and run the other end to a floor drain or outside. Open the drain valve. To help the tank drain, open the pressure relief valve on the top or side of the tank and also open the hot water side of a faucet inside the house. This allows air to enter the tank, breaking the vacuum and allowing water to flow out freely.
