After the riser is installed, it's time for the new stair tread. First, set the pre-cut tread in place without adhesive to ensure a proper dry fit. Once confirmed, remove the tread and apply a thick bead of polyurethane construction adhesive around the entire perimeter of the back of the tread. Then, apply a zigzag pattern of adhesive across the center of the tread for maximum hold. Carefully place the stair tread back into position, ensuring a 1/16 inch expansion gap all around. To secure, nail the tread within a quarter inch of the back edge only, as the next riser will hide these nail holes. If you are not installing optional risers, you will need to use matching wood putty to fill these nail holes later.
