Stair Tread Installation

Inspect the existing riser structure for any loose components, rot, or damage. Secure any loose boards with appropriate screws. If there is any sign of rot, remove the damaged section and replace it with a sound piece of wood. Ensure the framing is sturdy and can support the weight of the new treads. Clean away any dust, debris, or old adhesive from the riser surfaces.

Measure the depth and width of each stair riser where a tread will be installed. Transfer these measurements to your chosen tread material. Use a circular saw or miter saw to cut the treads to size, ensuring straight and clean edges. For treads that will overhang the riser, account for this overhang in your measurements. Double-check all measurements before cutting.

Place each cut tread onto its designated riser without any adhesive or fasteners. Check for a snug fit and ensure there are no significant gaps or high spots. Make any necessary minor adjustments by trimming edges with a hand plane or sandpaper. This step is crucial to ensure the final installation is level and secure.

Generously apply a high-quality construction adhesive to the underside of each tread or to the top of the riser structure. Ensure even coverage, extending the adhesive to within about an inch of the edges. Use a caulking gun to apply the adhesive in a zig-zag pattern or as recommended by the adhesive manufacturer. Avoid over-application which can squeeze out excessively.

Position each tread onto its prepared riser, pressing down firmly to ensure good contact with the adhesive. For added security, drive screws up from underneath the riser structure into the underside of the tread, or from the top of the tread into the riser framing if accessible and desired for a hidden finish. Use at least two screws per tread, spaced appropriately. Ensure the tread is level and flush before the adhesive begins to set.

Keep foot traffic off the stairs for the duration recommended by the construction adhesive manufacturer. This typically ranges from 24 to 72 hours. Ensure the area is undisturbed to allow the adhesive to form a strong, permanent bond.

Once the adhesive is fully cured, lightly sand the surface of the treads to remove any imperfections and prepare them for finishing. Use a fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth. Apply your chosen finish, such as polyurethane, varnish, or paint, in thin, even coats. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying times between coats. Apply at least two coats for durability.
