(7,904 characters)hey there folks this is josh stoney ridge farmer welcome back to another beautiful day here on the stoney ridge we have got an awesome surprise so this morning i went up to check on the cows and we're going to take you guys along and show you the awesome surprise we had a calf yesterday afternoon totally unexpected we got a little bull calf up here i want to show you guys and i'm also going to show you the watering system and how we've got everything set up up here so come along let's have a little bit of fun just showing you what's going on here today on the farm we got a special surprise awesome all right guys welcome back to the farm it's good to have you what a beautiful day we're having here it is hot these are the dog days of summer it is cooking out here so we've got a new calf on the farm today and this was totally unexpected i do believe that i have two pregnant cows uh one is number 42 and one is number 38. i don't really know we'll have to do some math together to figure this out but i don't really know how this happened how this went on without me uh knowing but the girls are out here they're doing great they're out here in the shade basically this time of year they eat in the morning they eat in the evening and they lounge around in the shade you'll see the cows laying down out here this is the watering setup right now that we currently have going um so i had to get water storage for the cows we've got a completely passive solar well system right here i do have a cover to go over top of the pressure tank and everything that's going to go on as soon as i can get some farm help to come up here and pick it up and put it over it however what we got going is this well pumps to this abi water trailer a water tank which has been a huge indispensable thing to have here on the farm and then gravity feeds into this water tank so we've got about a 400 gallon water tote right here that keeps the cows watered [Music] somebody's just show off which is so what you so grumpy about she's growling over here hey what are you growling about must be something in the woods i don't can you guys hear her growling let's go find the baby and show you lots of folks have asked why do you have a donkey out there with your cows well the donkey is with the cows so that they are protected so these young calves are pretty much helpless the cows aren't as fast of movers and they don't kick quite as hard as the donkey so the donkey will stick with the herd if you have two donkeys they will stick together if you have one donkey they will stick with the herd and they will help to keep the baby calves safe i don't know what that cow's problem is right there i think she's having an anxiety attack what's the matter dude what's what's the anxiety issue going on huh i don't get it pretty funny let's go check out the cows that we currently have we're probably going to have to ride way over here to see the new baby so you'll see this young calf this number one cath this calf was born this year it's a young bull calf and you'll see there's lots of little calves out here i totally did not expect to have any more calves this year totally totally didn't expect it they must have been bred maybe the day before we bought these cows and i think we had the cows brought out to the farm sometime in the december time frame and i thought all of our cows that were supposed to be pregnant had already had all their calves look at old grumpy right here she is just totally concerned that nobody else is over there with her it's pretty funny we're gonna go ahead and open up the fence right here and let these cows go into this pasture right over here go ahead guys go head over to the other side go ahead to the other side there you go hey suzy sue hey susie what you been doing susie you love me again huh susie loves to be rubbed right here you love me again susie do you love me again yeah you do that's old susie sue okay guys okay we're closing off closing off you can tell they do not like this polywire if it taps them they're like oh no i see our newest baby let's go up here and check him out hey girl what you doing here is our newest member of the stoney ridge farm hey little fella now he'll lay still here you go little fella how pretty are you look at how pretty you see that see how he jumped up and ran that's kind of the defense mechanism they'll stay still until they feel threatened and then they'll take off so he's looking good he's a healthy little bull any cute so what we want to see is mother and son interacting here and we want to also see nursing so that's what we look for when we first have our newest babies we need to make sure they're pooping and peeing and nursing just kind of like people each cow has its own distinctive little noise and this is mama right here she kind of makes a grunting noise mama and baby are very well bonded this is a healthy little calf i must say he's probably around the 60 to 70 pound mark mama seems to be a good mama she's taking good care of them now it's normal for the baby calves to be able to go underneath the fence right here the poly fence and that's okay they'll learn it as you can see right now that calf is learning there's no power on the poly fence so it's probably shouldn't be learning like that so you guys are seeing a little bit of the socialization process this young calf right here will kind of socialize in with the herd they just kind of become a family you can see how another cow is kind of licking the baby like i said they all kind of become a bit of a family here calf is nursing just like it should be mama will try and get between me and the cow or the calf most any time she can so that's that preventing predator's instinct when you have a herd of cows like this you can see the other cows have gotten in between me and the baby too and you've got a herd like this they kind of all stick together they kind of all protect each other really cool [Music] do okay [Music] do [Music] well guys that's what's going on on the farm today we got a new special arrival i'll keep you guys updated if number 42 has a calf she's showing signs meaning uh she's kind of off to herself a little bit and that's what you'll notice with a cow kind of get off to themselves a little bit the back end of the cow where their lady parts are will start to kind of dilate a little bit kind of get a little bit swollen and i'm seeing that in number 42 as well as number 38 38 was kind of sticking to herself for about two days and then she had her little calf i don't know guys help me name this little calf i think maybe lucky or daisy as in whoopsy daisy but he's the cutest little cow you've ever seen guys thanks a lot for joining me here on the stoney ridge farm i appreciate you this is what's going on here uh we won't have the cows out on this pasture but for a couple more days you can see that the forage is a little bit sparse and we're going to go ahead and move the cows over to the other side of the farm we've got a couple young bulls that we're probably going to go ahead and take to the market in other words take to the sale barn so that we can pay for next year's cow crop and pay for the hay we've got about four thousand dollars worth of hay that we've got to go pick up so that these guys have some good grub for the winter time guys if you're farming and you haven't gotten your hay yet you better get on it because it's a severe drought all over the whole country so plan ahead for your hay and you best start planting now fall cutting is coming into full season so see if you can secure yourself some good hay for your animals for the winter or you'll be at the sale barn selling off your herd we don't want that guys thanks a lot please pound the like button help me name this little calf it'll be awesome we'll see you next time on the stoney ridge [Music] it's roundup time kids [Music]
