What happens here
Slide a second oil drain pan under the oil filter. Use an oil filter cap wrench and a ratchet to loosen the oil filter. If a cap wrench isn't available, an oil filter wrench (pliers-style) can be used, though it might stab the filter slightly. Once loose, carefully unscrew the oil filter by hand. Place the old filter into the drain pan. The presenter prefers to use an oil filter drain pan that allows the filter to sit upright, minimizing mess. Take the new NAPA Gold Filter (Part number 1460) and apply a thin layer of new oil to its rubber gasket. Then, fill the new oil filter with fresh engine oil before re-installing it onto the engine. This pre-filling helps prevent the engine from running dry momentarily during startup.
Goal: Replace the old engine oil filter with a new one
