What happens here

After all pavers are laid and cut, paver sand (also known as polymeric sand if using a hardening type) is spread generously over the entire patio surface. A push broom is used to sweep the sand into all the joints between the pavers, ensuring each gap is completely filled. Once the joints are filled, the plate compactor, fitted with a rubber mat or using an old piece of carpet to protect the paver surface, is used for a final pass. This compacts the sand into the joints and further settles the pavers, locking them into place for stability and durability.

Goal: Fill paver joints with sand and compact the patio for stability.
