What happens here

For a slower but more precise method, secure the lawn mower blade in a vise. Take a file and apply it to the cutting edge of the blade, matching the original factory angle. Use firm, consistent strokes in one direction (pushing away from you is common) across the entire cutting edge. Continue filing until the blade is sharp and a burr forms on the opposite side. This method allows for greater control over the sharpening angle and removes less material.
